​ “So, do you work?” Kol wiped his nose, feeling sand grate against his skin. “Do princesses… need to work?”
 “Usually, but now I’m a freelancer.” Alessi felt at her hair, tragic and frayed.
 “You’re unemployed, you mean?” Kol asked.
 “If you must know, I am ‘available for hire’.” She threw her head back. “But money’s money, and business is business.” She had a severe look on her face. “That’s how things are in the witch kingdom.”

​Kit enjoyed writing as a child and rediscovered her passion during the COVID-19 lockdown. She has a degree in finance and recently graduated from law school, where she was the administrative editor of an academic publication. When she’s not writing, you can find her running barefoot, taming stray cats, or listening to paranormal podcasts.

​Inspiration for Wanderer of the Wastes

Hi, I’m Kit Karlsson, author of the fantasy romance novel *Wanderer of the Wastes*. During the COVID-19 pandemic, like many people, I decided to pass the time by getting a Crunchyroll account. That’s when I stumbled upon Darling in the Franxx, thanks to Crunchyroll's “random anime” button.
 
Darling in the Franxx is a mecha anime—centered around giant fighting robots—but the female love interest Zero Two really stuck with me. Anime characters can sometimes feel like they're following the same recycled tropes, but Zero Two had a feral charm that stayed in my mind. I wanted to capture some of that wild energy, but with a character more suited to a fantasy world. That’s how Alessi was born.
 
Alessi is older than Zero Two, more jaded, and less hopeful. She’s killed, and she’ll kill again, and she’s alright with that. While Zero Two wanted to become human, Alessi embraces her power and has no desire to weaken herself in order to be accepted. Once I had her character in mind, Alessi’s personality was strong enough to drive the plot forward.
