LORD OF THE JUNGLE
Book 1 of the JUNGLE ISLAND series

by

Sheri Fredricks

GENRE: Erotic Romance

A shipwrecked woman.
The uncharted island.

Jane Porter craves a thrill but when marauders scuttle her ship and she washes ashore onto an island inhabited by animals and one sexy wildman, that’s when the real adventure begins. Dependent upon her vine-swinging rescuer who acts more ape than musclebound man, she places her survival in his rugged hands and relinquishes her desire to his raw sensuality.

For more seasons than he can remember, Tarzan has lived among the tiny island’s gorilla band. Instinct propels him to save the female he finds half-dead in the surf, but gazing into her eyes, his mating tool dances an ancient tribal beat.

While the pirates search for their bounty, Tarzan and Jane are in danger. To survive, they’ll have to hang onto each other as they swing for dear life. Their adrenaline-rush of passion among the canopy of the jungle threatens not only a dizzying fall from a great height, but also into love.

“Jaguar’s gone.” She swung her attention back to him, and stared at his lengthened male part. “And I have a feeling my clothes will be, too.”

Whatever she’d said to his tool, it must have involved her mouth, because she licked her lips.

“Uh-uh.” He pulled on the flowered blue that covered her breasts, then pointed at the tougher shield over her legs. All females bore an opening in which the mating part slid in and out.

At the thought, his tool jumped. Tarzan wrapped his hand around the hardened length to subdue it.

“Here? In the tree?” With her brow wrinkled, the female appeared to become agitated again. “Seriously?”

He gazed down at her, wondering what caused such a reaction when moments before she was all sweet sounds and closed eyes—a sign of her readiness to mate. Hmm. It first happened when he’d touched the covering between her legs. Females in his family didn’t like their hair stroked in the opposite direction. Perhaps it was the same for this human female.

For the sake of his heavy mating tool, he tried again, reaching to stroke a soothing path over her covered breast.

Her eye-skin drooped.

He did the same to her other breast.

More drooping.

“Ooh-ooh.” A smile pulled the edges of his mouth. He was getting the hang of this mating thing. But the breast cover wasn’t his female’s skin, and he wanted to know the softness for himself. He skimmed a finger over her dewy cheek, then tugged at her shoulder where the cover lay bunched up. How could he unwrap this succulent fruit?

Unsure how to proceed, Tarzan straightened and leaned against the tree again, crossing his arms to think out the matter.

“Alright, I get it. You won’t get me out of the tree until I take my clothes off. By the way, when’s the last time you had a haircut?”

After the female stopped her chatter and flashed a quick, lopsided smile, her hands grasped the bottom of the breast covering and slowly peeled the damp cloth over her head.

He was breathing heavily, as though he’d just stepped off the treadmill. So was she. He’d showered just a couple of hours earlier, when they’d come in from the trial. The scent of fresh soap mixed with his musky male, woodsy scent. His body, already warm from the run, was getting hotter. Desire had her knees and arms trembling, and deep inside her internal muscles pulsed with need.

He groaned, pulling her closer, pressing her body flat against him.

With the very last of her willpower, in a throaty voice that didn’t sound to her own ears anything like herself, she said, “Just so you’re clear. Nothing is happening here but sex, and it has nothing to do with what happened before. We’re not going to have that conversation. Ever.”

“Believe what you want to believe,” he muttered, as his lips touched hers. “Just so you’re clear, I’d prefer to clear the air now. And we will go ther—”

“Forget it.”

“Give me a second,” he said, separating from her, turning, and walking away. He went into his bedroom, and reappeared before she caught her breath. He had a condom packet in his hand.

“Sex was a foregone conclusion on this job?”

Serious black eyes glanced at her with a complex look swirling with undercurrents that she couldn’t decipher. “If this were just a job, I wouldn’t be here.”

“I’m on the pill,” she said, a fact that had been sufficient for him before.

“Learned the hard way that the pill isn’t foolproof,” he said with a frown, “and I’d still prefer to clear the air first. By talking.”

She stepped closer to him, stood on tiptoes, and whispered, before their lips met, “Not sure the air will ever be clear and don’t want to waste time talking.” Before he could grab her arms, she gripped the waistband of his shorts and yanked them down.

His mouth found hers as she wrapped her hand around him. Pressing herself against his abdomen, she felt him shudder as she ran her fingers down the taut flesh of his erection.

Now. Please. Persuade me I’ve been wrong. Prove my memory distorted reality. Show me you’re really not the best.

I lay there for a while longer, allowing the ball of fire that was building in my gut to grow. Where
sadness had enveloped me, a new strength began to rise. I calmed my breathing to a slow and deep
rhythm, letting this feeling unfurl its tendrils and spread. I rose onto my hands and knees, barely
aware of someone calling my name. With my head bowed to the floor and eyes shut, I ceased to resist.
I no longer bit back against the turmoil. I relaxed with a deep, calming breath. Deep breath in, deep
breath out, repeat.
“Don’t be scared my sweet girl, I’m here, you are safe,” I could feel Enl’iel’s presence, her
soothing energy, yet my body screamed from within.
“I -, help -, please -,” I couldn’t catch a breath as Enl’iel called out.
“Kea, call for Koi, we will need him as soon as he can get here.” I thought I heard Ben call my
name. Enl’iel reminded me with that she was right by my side, but Brennan’s alarming comment was
the clearest in my mind.
“She’s Quickening—give her some space. It’s okay, Soph, let it happen. Let go. You’ll be okay, I
promise. ” His voice seemed distant, yet comforting.
I drew my breath in again, impossibly deep. I opened my eyes wide and without warning let out a
primal scream. Light seemed to pour out of my mouth, illuminating the room. The force thrust me
back on my heels, my arms flung wide. My scream seemed to go on forever. I felt a connection to
something in the air surrounding me, like plugging myself into a socket. Something crackled across
my skin. A million energies passed through me. Countless ghostly faces came in flashes. They were
strangers, and yet they were also somehow familiar. And then I saw Him. His eyes were a swirling
galaxy of every colour, and they looked deep into mine. An indescribable beauty, yet not of flesh, but
of love. I knew Him, and He knew me. I tried to call out His name, to beg for help but I was mute, and
He was gone.
The pain took over. I screamed like a trapped animal as my entire body lit up seemingly from
within. Acid poured through every artery and vein. My spine cracked and crunched as it changed and
contorted into a new design. My will to resist this change was long since dead, my understanding of
normality no longer in my repertoire. My chest heaved forward as an immense thrust of energy burst
from within. It was like electrocution in reverse. I was sending out the impulses. Each beat of my heart
thundered in my head. Heat poured from my spine as a bright light enveloped me, forcing me to fall
forward to the floor again—spent. The thud of my weight on the boards seemed to echo. I looked
down at my arms; the bloody scratches flickered on my skin. I forced myself to sit back up and watch
my hands so I could see the miracle. I gazed at them, looking for answers. Pulsing veins glowed and
dulled rapidly across my palms in tune with my heartbeat. Each thrum lit up the vessels so that they
shone through my skin, like rivers of white light. My limbs were heavy. These strange hands
shimmered in and out of focus as I noticed the drying blood that crusted in the grooves was glowing
iridescently. Specks of light swirled within the crimson detritus. I bent my head to the side, squinting,
trying to make sense of what I was seeing. Broken fingernails nails and torn skin healed before my
eyes.
The pain was slowly dissipating, being replaced by something else. The skin on my back now
tingled in a more pleasant way, like having a warm blanket thrown across cool skin. My body started
to feel light and weightless. My head was no longer aching, and the sting seemed gone from my eyes.
A new sensation dawned upon me, and it felt like I now had an extra set of arms. I could feel myself
waving these things, but they weren’t exactly arms. I wanted to move them, but they felt stiff, as
though they’d not been used for a long time. I waved them about. My entire body shifted along the
floor. Surprised, I moved them harder. I travelled further along the floor. I had no idea what I was
doing or why, but I knew in my bones that I needed to do this. I put as much effort into the movement
as I could muster. Suddenly, I noticed that my legs were no longer dragging along the ground. I
looked down at my feet as I felt myself rise up into the air.
I was hovering above the floor. I could feel the light pulsing behind me in tune with my heartbeat,
keeping me steady and aloft. My new arms were wings of light that I seemed to have control of. I
could make them move back and forth at will. I realised in that moment that I felt right, and that before
this, I had actually never been normal, in a very surreal sense of the definition. All the pain was
replaced by warmth and strength. My body was telling me who and what I was.
On that day I was reborn.

Powerfully enchanting! I was completely blown away by this enthralling book! From the very first page, I was completely captivated until the very end and found it extremely hard to put down. The writing was just superbly excellent with intricate attention to details. The characters were well thought out with palpable emotions that made me actually feel in touch with them. With a completely unique storyline, Awaken brings an all new take on the classic Angels vs Demons theme. This book has a little bit of everything mixed in. Angels, Demons, magic, sci-fi, a splash of romance and even a few zombies! With tons of intrigue and plenty of plot twists that stunned me, there's not a single dull moment in this book, I was gripping my tablet with sweaty hands- eagerly devouring the pages to find out what would happen next! The attention to details and the complex world-building and thought that the author put into this book was just amazing! There is quite a cliffhanger at the end that both had me clawing up the wall in anticipation and then clapping for joy that there will be a sequel to this amazing book! This is a seriously really amazingly good book that will soon be a chart-topper!

 “Go on. Sing more.”
He did, and she listened with her eyes half closed. The tones were sweet, the emotion fierce, the quality hands-down better than the singer on the radio. Everything she learned about Elliot was adding up to an extraordinary man.
While she remained plain, average Fia. With “issues.”
“Beautiful,” she responded when the song ended. At about the same time, he turned into her driveway.
He came around and held hands with her to the stoop and up the steps, where he propped open the storm door with his boot while she unlocked the door. She set her purse on the floor inside the door, then faced him. “I’m not going to invite you inside because you’ve got to get up early.”
“Darn.” He moved a step closer, fitted his hands to her waist, and leaned toward her. She met him in the kiss, her mouth parting, her hands sliding around to the back of his neck, combing through his silky hair. Dear Lord, she’d forgotten how good a kiss could be. She nibbled at his lip, pausing only when his tongue thrust between her teeth, invading, exploring, rousing a long-unsatisfied need deep inside. Moving intuitively, her hands glided over soft cotton that covered the lean muscles along his spine. When they reached the rougher texture of jeans and leather belt, the tips tingled, like the briefest touch of a live wire, singeing and searing and sparking pleasure through her body.
When she stroked a few inches lower to slide her palm over his erection, his breath caught, and so did hers. It had been so very long . . .would be so very easy . . . back up one step, don’t let go, take him to the bedroom or, better, the couch, strip off their clothes . . .So easy. So perfect. So wrong.
Even the thought of that last word was wrong. It jangled in the midst of nerves humming with need. It pulled her out of the haze of what she could do, of the incredible satisfaction she could have, and brought back all the ugly uncertainty of her life. Elliot might be Prince Charming, but she was no princess, and her life was no simple, sweet fairy tale with a happily ever after.
Tears seeped into her eyes—disappointment, weariness—and she opened her eyes to blink them away. Apparently sensing the change in her, Elliot ended the kiss with another tiny, sweeter kiss, then clasped her hands in his. For a long time, he studied her face with an intensity that rippled along her skin, then he took a step back, putting breathing room between them.
When he spoke, he sounded as if he’d done a long hump with a heavy ruck on a hot day. “You never did tell me.”
“What?”
“Is Fia short for something?”
“You never did ask.” She didn’t sound much better. “Sofia.”
He laid his palm gently against her cheek, repeated her name, then backed away even farther. “Thank you, Sofia.”
“For what?”
“Being in that parking lot Friday night. For liking me and my dog. For kissing like—” Breaking off, he grinned and shook his head. “Damn.”
“It takes two.”
His grin strengthened, then slowly faded. “Good night.”
Leaning against the door jamb, she watched him go to his truck, get in, and drive away with a final wave. Sighing deeply, she stepped inside the house, closed and locked the door, and stumbled, hitting the floor with a solid thud.

Book #3 of the Siren Song series:

When the smoke clears, who will be left standing?

Tattoo artist June Coffin has another, more hidden talent: she’s a Siren who can influence people with the sound of her voice. But in the wake of a murder and shake-up at the Institute of Supernatural Research, her own powers are starting to kill her. The only chance she has of saving herself—as well as her kidnapped brother and best friend—is to become a vampire. But joining the ranks of the vengeful vamp, Occam Reed, is the last thing June wants to do.

Occam isn’t the only danger June needs to worry about. Power hungry telepath Robbie Beecher will stop at nothing to gain control over Chicago. He’ll destroy anyone who gets in his way—and June’s lover, Sam, is high on the hit list since his bid for Mayor. With the city and June’s heart being pulled in different directions, it’s only a matter of time before the powder keg explodes…and time isn’t something June has much of left. With a city on fire, can she rise from its ashes?

EXCERPT

Like a bored, despondent child, she dragged around the house, on the verge of throwing a tantrum because there was nothing to do. She walked out on the front porch. Night had fallen, the stars out. She trudged down the long set of stairs from the porch to the driveway. Dipity plunked down the steps after her.
“Don’t run away,” June told the cat as they reached the bottom. “I’m not digging through the bushes to find you. You’ll be sleeping outside tonight.”
June sat down on the bottom step. Dipity walked around the yard, sniffing things. Lightning bugs flickered in the darkness, little yellow pulses of light. The driveway was packed with cars.
She picked at her fingernails, trying to shake the looming sense of awkwardness hanging over her, the loneliness of being an outsider, of being that left-out kid she once was. She’d vowed she would never be that girl again, yet here she was.
A nearby sound startled her. She jerked her head up.
What she’d heard was strange and alarming—the sound of leaves rustling and a weird, heavy thump.
Dipity shot back over to the stairs and stopped next to June, tail in the air, staring across the yard.
June got to her feet. She squinted into the shadows under the line of trees across the yard. The trees weren’t too far away, maybe fifty feet, but it was so dark now she couldn’t make out anything.
“Hello?” she called. Maybe one of the guards was patrolling the grounds.
Silence.
She was tired of being spooked, of hearing bizarre sounds and not knowing their source. She crossed the yard toward the trees, the grass prickling her bare feet. Dipity sprinted back up the stairs to the porch.
“Hello?” she called again. “Is someone there?”
As she drew closer to the trees, the shadows lessened in density, and she could make out something—a shape—lying on the ground. She slowed, holding her breath. She didn’t want to be attacked by a nervous possum or sprayed by a skunk.
However, the shape was much too big to be an animal. In fact, it looked like a person.
She stopped, about ten feet away, standing beneath the overhanging branches. She tried to convince herself she wasn’t seeing clearly.
“Hello?” She considered using her power. “Hey, can you hear me?”
The shape didn’t move. It couldn’t be a person. What the hell would a person be doing lying underneath the trees in Sam’s yard?
Unless he wasn’t alive.
Then came the unmistakable soft swish of someone walking through the grass behind her. Before she could turn around, someone whispered close to her ear.
“For you, darling. Come home soon.”
She spun around, a scream catching in her throat.
No one was there.
“Occam!”

                                                                   By Perry Morris

The Lemurian Chronicles by Perry Morris is an epic fantasy that began in 2015 with the publication of Children of the Blessing. Readers all over the world have been enthralled with the gripping tale of Renn and Avaris—two boys who were marked by the gods to become powerful magic users. Chaos Rising, the eagerly anticipated second book of the Lemurian Chronicles, continues the exciting epic story.
Avaris travels into the heart of the Cragg Caves—the home of horrifying beasts, warlocks and demons—to rescue his sister and best friend from slave labor in the mines deep underground. But getting out of the caves alive is only the beginning of his troubles as he is hunted by an army of evil magic users and blood thirsty beasts who have been given the assignment to kill him before he learns to fully use his powers.
Renn (Demaris) is studying at the castle on Elder Island under the watchful eye and protection of the lore masters. But a traitor is in their midst who is being blackmailed by Shamael Daro, the new Grand Warlock, to carry out a single task—eliminate Renn.
Shamael’s power has increased significantly since taking on the mantle of Grand Warlock and he discovers the dark secret of how the most powerful Grand Warlock of all time, Nefarian Drakkas, nearly took total control of Lemuria more than two thousand years ago. He uses this secret to create a group of soulless, magic using spies and killers to do his bidding. His plan is simple; create chaos across the land so the dark forces of the Aven lore can destroy those who follow the gods of light once and for all.

“I can’t see well enough,” Lekiah said. He held the bow in front of him, arrow notched and string pulled back to his right ear. “Can you do something to light it up a bit?”
“I thought I was supposed to wait to use bone and fire until after you’d killed a couple of them,” Avaris replied. Lekiah lowered the bow in frustration. “We need another plan.” He looked down the corridor that led to the study. He could barely make out the sturdy door on the far side. Kalisha was so close, and still he could do nothing for her. What was happening to her behind that door? Was she being tortured? It was torturing him not knowing. He felt like rushing forward and just…what? He could fight warriors, but not warlocks, witches, and necromancers. He still remembered how helpless he was to save his tribe when Kahn Devin attacked.
Renaul began saying something and gesturing. He pointed at each of them and then down toward the battle. It took a few minutes to understand his meaning; at least Lekiah thought he understood.
“I think he wants us to rush into to the battle,” Lekiah said with uncertainty. Avaris raised a questioning eyebrow at Lekiah, and then watched Renaul a little more. He definitely seemed to be indicating the three of them should go into the heart of the battle.
“It’s crazy,” Avaris said, “but Renaul might be right.” Now Lekiah raised his eyebrow in surprise. He was brave, but this was probably suicide—and if they died, nobody could help Kalisha. “I have a plan; we just have to hope one of them knows our language.” “I don’t know anything about these people,” Lekiah said slowly, “but the three warlocks who visited the mine while I was there could all speak our language.”     Avaris nodded and thought about it. “Kintara and Kahn Devin were able to talk in both languages…” Avaris looked down the corridor as a particularly loud crack sounded and rubble and dust filled the air again. He handed a knife to Lekiah; “cut two strips of cloth off the bottom of your robe,” he said.         Lekiah gave him a questioning look, but set down his bow and quickly made a small cut in the cloth and tore off a couple strips.
“You’ll both need to tie those around your forehead to cover the scars.” Lekiah handed one strip to Renaul and tied the other around his head. A gleam of understanding appeared in the slave boy’s eyes and he, too, tied the cloth around his forehead. “Let’s go!” Avaris said with determination. Suddenly a red glow sizzled and crackled around the thigh bone in Avaris’ hand. He looked at Lekiah and Renaul, nodded once, and then shouted out a war cry as he rushed headlong down the corridor toward the fight.

Perry was born and raised in the greater Salt Lake City, Utah area. He is very happily married and has seven wonderful children and one grand-daughter. Perry works for a large, publically traded, international company in Provo, Utah, where he manages supplier management, procurement and packaging engineering functions. His first exposure to the great world of fantasy literature was, of course, J.R.R Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, when he was fourteen. After that, he read the books of Patricia McKillap, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Stephen R. Donaldson, etc...Currently his favorite author is Brandon Sanderson. He loves the unique and interesting magic systems Brandon creates, the memorable characters and interesting stories.
Perry is an author every day for an hour during lunch. He actually began writing the Lemurian Chronicles in 1993, and after more than two decades of rewrites, editing, re-editing, etc... finally decided to “take the plunge” and publish his epic fantasy. Don't worry; each additional installment will be released no more than eighteen months to two years apart.
Thanks for you interest in Perry and his works.

book blurb
She’s a widow. He’s a reformed player. One passionate night changes them both forever.

Toni Harrison isn’t buying anything Ahmad Espen is selling. Everyone considers him the savior of the African American community but she knows him as a heartless player and plans to steer clear of him. The only problem is her sister and Ahmad’s brother are smitten with each other and despite Toni’s attempts otherwise, she constantly finds herself in Ahmad’s presence.

Ahmad understands why Toni is wary of him, but he’s a totally different man from the boy she knew in college. Now he’s determined to push past all her defenses to gain her trust. When he finally does, one passionate night with her confirms she’s the perfect woman for him.

Yet it seems there’s no fairy-tale ending for them, as Ahmad and Toni find out the hard way. Someone is out to destroy their relationship, along with Ahmad’s good name and Toni’s privacy. Once more Toni has good reason to distance herself from Ahmad, since he blames her for the whole mess. Heartbroken again, she walks away, and by the time he comes to his senses, he realizes it may well be too late to rewrite their love story to give it a happy ending.

excerpt

Toni flicked her gaze from her phone to the man standing above her with every intention of telling him the same thing she’d told the others. As soon as she looked up, her heart seized on a beat and her breath formed a lump in her throat. Toni not only stared at who was possibly the finest man she’d ever seen in her life, but also one she hadn’t seen in eleven years.

Ahmad Espen.

A vision of the last time he’d talked to her flashed across her mind and was just what she needed to close her gaping mouth and firm her back. She stared back at him, waiting for…for what exactly? For him to mention what had happened between them? For him to apologize?

He smiled down at her, flashing bright white teeth. “I’m sorry to disturb you, miss. But I saw you sitting all alone back here and thought you could use some company.”

Miss? Company?

She didn’t know if she should be mad or glad. He didn’t seem to recognize her. On one hand, she didn’t have to relive the embarrassment but on the other, he’d dismissed their last encounter, while she’d held onto it for all these years.

“I-I’m…um. I don’t need company.” Did she just stutter? She wanted to slap a hand across her forehead. She gripped her cell phone tightly to stop herself from doing just that and making a bigger fool of herself.

When she’d been a freshman in college and he’d been the sexy and worldly junior, she’d had the same reaction—stumbling, bumbling idiot. Get it together, Toni. She wasn’t a green little girl anymore.

“Well, if you don’t want me to sit with you, can I have this dance?”

If she were any other woman at the party, she would’ve gladly jumped up and taken him up on his offer. But while everyone knew Ahmad as an African-American motivational speaker who’d sprung onto the scene five years before, attracting more followers to his ‘black community self-help’ doctrine, Toni knew him as a promiscuous, rowdy fraternity boy. While Toni admired his topic, the man behind the words often left a bad taste in her mouth. Every time she saw him on television talking about his main agenda, the state of the African American community and the need to revitalize and energize the younger generation, she couldn’t help but remember how he’d treated her. “Why?”

He took a quick glance around. “You’re the only person not on the dance floor or mingling.”

She smiled up at him like she’d done to the other men. Everyone else in the room could worship at his feet. They thought he was so great, so perfect. “No, thank you. I’m watching the drinks and purses,” she said, but what she really wanted to tell him was to go to hell.

The emotion on his face quickly went from enamored to confused. “All I’m asking for is one dance.”

She’d once given him a dance and she’d let that go to her head and let him sweet talk her into his twin-sized bed. Well, there hadn’t really been that much sweet talking involved, it hadn’t been needed. She would’ve gone with him even if he’d recited the alphabet. “I’m not much of a dancer.” The lie quickly fell from her mouth.

“Sooo.” He motioned his hand through the air. “You’re at a singles mingle—dance party, I might add—and you can’t dance?”

As she shook her head, her hair bounced around her face. “No, I can’t. Not a lick.”

“So, that’s your excuse for turning down everyone who asked you to dance?”

She peered straight into his eyes. “Yes.” It was a good thing that she’d long gotten over wanting to poke his eyes out with a rusty fork because he was in arm’s reach and there was a fork, albeit not rusty, on her table.

                                 by J.G. Zymbalist
                                          GENRE
: YA Fantasy

Song of the Oceanides is a highly-experimental triple narrative transgenre fantasy that combines elements of historical fiction, YA, myth and fairy tale, science fiction, paranormal romance, and more.  For ages 10-110.
Picture
Dyce’s Head, Maine.
31 August.
Rory Slocum had only just returned home from Putnam’s General Store and Newsagent when he noticed the girl standing in the heart of the garden. She seemed to be lost in the music of the wind chimes dangling from Mother’s lilac tree. Still, despite the girl’s seeming innocence, somehow he just knew that she must be one of the Oceanides who had been taunting him all summer long.
She must have heard his footsteps in the salty afternoon breeze because she turned to look upon him. What a comely girl too.

A bit of jam and then some! He stopped in his tracks and studied her classical features.
She had plum-black hair, eyes of sea green, bold chiseled planes to her face, fine hallowed cheeks, and a sharp jaw line. How could she be anything but an Oceanide?

Slowly he advanced as far as the fog cannon where he paused a second time. Perhaps he would do something so as to entertain her, and once she realized how amusing he could be, she would tell the others to leave him be. He walked over to the lilac tree. “Look what I’ve got here!” With that he held up his copy of Sir Pilgarlic Guthrie’s Phantasy Retrospectacle.

She must have resented the whole notion that a boy like Rory would even think to approach someone like her. Grimacing, she called to another girl who had just walked up through the gale-torn bluffs. The two of them spoke in a tongue resembling the Byzantine Greek in which the drunken churchwarden sometimes delivered his public addresses.
As giddy as ever, Rory advanced a few more steps. “You know what they call this sort of picture book, do you? Down at Putnam’s, they tell me it’d be un comique pittoresque. Just like the newsagents sell down there in Paris.” Now he pointed to the picture on the dust jacket—the Oceanides’ long flowing hair and the mint-cream linen gowns reaching down to their ankles. Afterward he pointed at the girls themselves standing there in their own creamy-white gowns. “Sir Pilgarlic Guthrie, he’s the bettermost! Everything bang up to the elephant and—”
“Have you any idea how odd you are?” the first Oceanide asked. “And you’ll be beginning your fifth year in school next fall, isn’t that right? They’ll tear you apart, a beanpea like you.”

book blurb

Immortal and a member of the Sinistra Dei, a secret order designed to eliminate threats to the Vatican, Giovanna was created to do the dirty work of the Church. This requires creative thinking and the ability to tap dance on the line between right and wrong.

As the commander she loves slowly sinks into insanity, she learns that dark immortals—the Execrati dedicated to destroying her kind— have snuck into New Orlean’s legendary French Quarter to hunt her friends. With the further discovery that one of Rome’s own has faked his death, and the unexpected evolution of her supernatural powers, Gia is no longer able to play by the rules.

How can she defy the man she loves, break the trust of a close friend, and explain the new set of wings on her back?

The answer is simple… she can’t.
excerpt
Giovanna stalked her prey through the narrow alley of the French Quarter.

Nightfall brought music and drunken laughter. She followed the man, waiting for the opportunity to judge and, perhaps, to kill. Above her Torben crouched on the rooftop waiting.

“Where are you?” she whispered.

“I’m right here.” A man stepped into the dim light. Shadows deepened his gaunt features, accentuating the hollows of his cheeks.

“You selling?” She feigned a nervous catch in her voice.

“Naw, but I’m buying.”

Gia caught the gleam of metal in his hand. Even from six feet away she detected the sour scent of chemicals mingled with sweat, liquor, and stale cigarettes. The man before her was dangerous by human standards.

Gia took a step in the addict’s direction, and he lunged for her. She sidestepped his advance and shoved him against the wall. The scent of human blood assaulted her senses, made her stomach turn.

Torben leapt from the roof, landing a foot to her right. He looked every bit the part of a tenth century Norseman—dark blond hair, blue eyes, well-muscled, and a scruffy pointed beard. He could have stepped off the cover of some cheesy Viking romance novel. Even his name was a cliché’. Torben, “the Bear of Thor”.

He hoisted the man up and held him at arm’s length while the little bastard flailed in mid-air. The man struggled, kicking and stabbing to no avail. Torben’s height gave him the advantage.

“Drop it.” Gia laced her words with compulsion.

The knife clattered to the ground.

The addict renewed his effort to break free. Torben wrapped an arm around the man’s midsection. “Be still.”

He stopped moving. “I got money. You want money? Take it. Got drugs too.”

Gia frowned. “I miss the old days when we had wars to fight. Hell, I wouldn’t even mind an assassination order. At least I could have some fun, get creative, you know?”

“Peace never lasts.” Torben adjusted his grip on the human.

She rolled her eyes. “Ever the optimist.”

“Do you want to read him or shall I?”

“I will.” Gia stepped in front of her would-be assailant. She pressed her fingertips on the exposed flesh of his wrist and closed her eyes.

Her mind exploded with images of the human’s life, memories, emotions, regrets, evidence of past sins laid out for her judgment. He preferred the intimacy of killing with knives and took trophies from the bodies—a finger from one, a pretty blue eye from another. She counted four women in total.

She detected no remorse. If he regretted his sins she could choose to release him unharmed, or perhaps release him with the knowledge of the pain he had brought to others in hopes that he would choose a different path for the future. The monster in Torben’s arms laughed as he relived the worst of his sins. There would be no mercy.

“Verdict?”

“Death. He had only pride in his skill. He was ... nostalgic for his kills.”

Torben nodded and pressed his hand to the junkie’s face. “I’m not surprised.”

Without a word Gia rose to her tiptoes and wrapped her hand around the man’s neck. She opened a link between herself and the human, feeding from his energy, his prana. As she fed, her pale skin illuminated and she dipped her chin to allow her dark hair to hide the light.

“I love it when you glow.” Torben chuckled and began to feed.

“It’s fun in private but it draws too much attention on the streets.”

“I remember how fun it was in private.”

Gia narrowed her eyes. “What has gotten into you? Are you flirting with me? Again?”

“What if I am?”

“It’s been a couple of centuries since you have.”

“Have I told you lately how beautiful your eyes are? Like icy-blue jewels.” He grinned.

“Have I told you lately that you are a class-A pain in the ass?” She cut off the energy flow from the human but maintained the mental connection.

“What are you doing?”

“I want to read his thoughts as he dies.”

Torben’s eyes widened. “That’s rather morbid.”

“It’s fascinating. Sometimes I can see a light. It reminds me there’s more to this world than we can see.”

“You need to read a human to believe there’s more than the physical world?”

Gia shrugged. The connection between herself and the dying man flared to life. She shared his terror as ghosts of the women he murdered crowded the alley. Some cried for justice while others laughed. Even his mother came—not to comfort, but to condemn. They crowded around and pulled at him with cold dead hands. He struggled to escape, but his heart convulsed, and he clutched his chest. He died in the alley while his victims called for his soul.

Gia broke the link, dazed. No longer in his head she couldn’t see the spirits. “I wonder if the ghosts are still here.”

“They are manifestations of his mind. There are no such things as ghosts.” Torben eased the body to the ground.

“How can you be certain?”

“I can’t, I guess.” Torben slid his arm around her shoulders and led her out of the alley. His shoulders tensed and his expression grew more serious.

“What’s wrong?”

“We need to talk.”

She stepped out from under his arm. “I’ve noticed you seem more ... attentive toward me. But, Torben, we can’t cross that line.”

“This is far more serious than our relationship, or lack thereof.”

“That sounds ominous.”

Torben stopped walking and turned to her. “It’s Lochlain. He’s—”

“He’s worried about Marin. It’s been a long time since he imbued a human. He’s fine.”

“He’s not fine. The day is coming when I’ll be forced to take control of the clutch.”

Gia refused to let his words sink in. “You’re wrong, and committing treason. Lochlain won’t let you take the clutch.”

“He may have no choice.” Torben met her gaze. “I’m worried about your safety, Giovanna. Lochlain isn’t in his right mind. He is losing himself to the darkness. You of all people have to know this.”

She pulled away. “I need to get back to work.”

“I’ll walk with you.”

Torben fell in beside her as they walked back to the bar on Bourbon Street. Gia lost herself in her thoughts. What would become of the clutch if Torben forced Lochlain to step down? Could they survive it?

Gia turned to him. “Torben, you’ve been by Lochlain’s side since you joined the Order of the Sinistra Dei. What? A thousand years ago?”

“Something like that.”

“If what you say is true you need to help Lochlain. You two are like yin and yang. The clutch will fall apart without that balance.”

“I know you love him, Giovanna, but it may be too late.”

She ran her hands up his chest, using his desire for her to her advantage. “Lochlain has a quick temper and loves the sound of his own voice, but that doesn’t mean he’s evil.”

“There’s more to it than that.” Torben put his hands over hers and removed them from his chest, though he didn’t release them.

“Torben, you’re scaring me. Not many of us remain in the world. Letting even one slip into darkness, or be put to death by the Church—”

“I’ll do what I can for Lochlain.” Torben conceded.

“Thank you.”

book blurb

In a world where Fae and Vampire will forever be at odds, a Vampire wins the crown, ruling the Fae Realm for the first time in history. An Incubus, Leolin Kyffin, and his barren Succubus, Louise Bach, plot to end King Zachariah Orsova’s life, allowing them to rule the Fae Realm. Through Louise’s encouragement, Leolin walks into a female Vampire’s dream and mates with her, breaking Zachariah’s law. His hope is to create what he thinks will be the most powerful half-breed known to the Realm. When Zachariah kills the Succubus, Leolin vows revenge, sacrificing his half-breed son, Monty Saxon, and using him as a pawn to tear out the King’s heart, hoping to make him feel the pain of death while living. When Leolin walks into Zachariah’s dreams, he fills his mind with unimaginable thoughts and desires. Doing the same to Monty, he secures his devious plot, patiently waiting for the precise moment Zachariah and Monty will be brought together as one. The choices Leolin makes all add up to delivering a fate worse than death to his half-breed son and the King of the Fae Realm. Will Leolin avenge the murder of Louise? Will Zachariah and Monty survive, or will they be left suffering in the end?

excerpt

“Walk ahead. I’ll meet you inside.”
Håkon gazed at his King. “Sire, I do not like this. I cannot leave you alone.”
He smiled and rested his hand on Håkon’s shoulder. “I will be right there. Go. Get us our drinks.”
“Aye,” Håkon said with a nod. “But if you don’t come in soon, I’m coming back out. We don’t have much time before the danger rises in the sky.”
“Understood.”
Once Håkon walked on, Zachariah stared into the alleyway, not seeing anything in the darkness. He heard the moan again, deciding to investigate. It would be an easy feeding if someone were already on the verge…
Something was off. He stopped in his tracks and inhaled deeply, picking up traces of Fae blood in the air. His lips curled up as his fangs elongated, a shiver coursing through his body. While Fae blood was not an effective means of feeding, the taste was extraordinary. Something not usually experienced by most Vampires. A delicacy only sampled in the most extreme cases.
A Fae’s death.
