Beyond Your Touch Dark Heart Series Book Two By Pat Esden Genre: new adult paranormal
She wants more than he can promise. His desires could lead to betrayal. But without each other, neither can survive the dangers ahead. Annie Freemont knows this isn’t the right time to get involved with a man like Chase. After years of distrust, she’s finally drawing close to her estranged family, and he’s an employee on their estate in Maine. Though she never intended to stay on the estate for long, her father’s illness and the mysteries surrounding her family made leaving impossible. And now with the newfound hope of rescuing her long-missing mother, Annie’s determined to be involved with the family’s plans one way or another.
If only she could keep her mind off Chase and focus on the impending rescue. But there’s something about the enigmatic Chase that she can’t resist. And she’s not the only woman. Annie fears a seductive stranger who is key to safely freeing her mother is also obsessed with him. As plans transform into action and time for a treacherous journey into a strange world draws near, every move Annie makes will test the one bond she’s trusted with her secrets, her desires—and her heart.

Hmmm. Where to start? I suspect my friends would say I have a lot of quirks. My husband and I are antique dealers, so there is always an odd collection of things coming and going from my small house. It’s rather like living in the storage room of a museum. Today, several vintage typewriters, a pair of old railroad caution lights, and a hundred-year-old sign advertising “Golden Wedding Whiskey” took up residence on the floor in front of our TV. In truth, the Moonhill mansion in my Dark Heart series is a very much grander, much more valuable, and neater version of my own home.
I also have always had an interest in edible wild plants, so sometimes there are strange things brewing on my stove. Last summer, along with letting a variety of weeds and briars grow in my gardens, I had a tub of rather creepy pink oyster mushrooms sprouting on my porch.
What is the most interesting thing that's ever happened to you?
I’ve had a lot of interesting things happen. But earlier today, I was thinking back on when I was a teenager and my father and I came across a head-on car accident on a bridge. We were one of the first people there. The cars were on fire and the other people who had stopped acted frozen. My dad had polo as a young adult and consequentially he had one leg that was unusable, still he headed straight for flaming car. I went to the other car. The woman I pulled out was basically okay, except one of her eyes had popped out of the socket. I’d recently had some first aid, so I managed to deal with that and get her off the bridge and to a nurse who had arrived on the scene. I remember looking back after that and seeing my dad carrying a larger man to safety, despite his own handicap. Later I learned the man had broken both legs and would never have been able to escape on his own. Years after that, my father went to purchase a piece of land to build his retirement house on. The owner turned out to be the man he’d rescued—and he recognized my dad immediately.
Maybe that wasn’t the most interesting thing that ever happened to me. Still, it’s something I think back on when I’m writing. It reminds me about how different people will react differently under stress. It also makes me think about fate.

What inspired you to write this book?
BEYOND YOUR TOUCH is the second book in the Dark Heart series. It actually was inspired by the mystery that is at the heart of A HOLD ON ME (Dark Heart book 1) --and also by my desire to not make falling in love easy for Annie and Chase. It’s hard to say a lot more without giving spoilers for book 1.
