My son looked at me as if I was wearing swim fins for a hat.
“I’m serious. Here’s the rope. I want you to knot it up good and tight.”
He slowly backed away.
In REFUGE FOR MASTERMINDS, Lady Jane must escape from being tied to a chair. This is something Miss Stranje required the girls to practice in A SCHOOL FOR UNUSUAL GIRLS. However, to write Jane’s escape scene, I needed to really know how, not just make a guess at it. So, to make sure the method of escape I was using would actually work, I asked my son to tie me to a chair.
At first, he was reluctant to tie up his mother. Sweet son, but I needed help. I assured him it was all in the interest of scientific discovery.
He rolled his eyes, but complied. He did such a splendid job I couldn’t get loose. My best guess turned out to be wrong. It took a couple attempts, but finally I figured out a technique that worked.
Lucky thing, or I might still be tied to a chair in the dining room.
