Excerpt:
From a distance, I couldâve sworn I saw the ghost of Marilyn Monroe.
There was a beautiful woman standing next to Marco in the parking lot of the 50âs hamburger palace. They were leaning up against the side of his vintage car, waiting and doused in the shadows of slow pulsing neon lights. His arm was draped around her shoulders. It appeared she was propping him up. She laughed when she steadied him and the sound was sweet and melodic. She was a platinum blonde, dressed in a black pencil skirt and a low-cut white angora sweater. There was a red chiffon scarf tied around her neck. She exuded power in her black stiletto heels. She was a movie star in the making, a glamorous goddess just waiting for someone to discover her and catapult her to fame. If anyone had been born for a life on the silver screen, it was her.
She pried herself away from Marco and stepped in my direction. âYou must be Johnny,â she said. I nodded in reply, mesmerized by the seductive green color of her eyes and the tenderness of her voice. She leaned in, kissed my cheek, and then spent the next few seconds trying to wipe her lipstick off my skin. Her touch was soft and comforting.
âAre you Marilyn Monroe?â I asked. My words fell into her cleavage.
âYouâre close,â she said. âIâm Mary.â
âYes,â I said. âMarco mentioned you.â
âHeâs like a brother to me,â she whispered. âBe gentle with his heart.â
Marco moved to us, wrapping an arm around us, connecting and cementing us as a trio. âIâm a lucky guy,â he said. âI get to spend the night with my two favorite people.â
âMarco doesnât have many favorites,â Mary explained. She was clearly his interpreter. âSo, I guess that makes us the lucky ones.â
Marco gently guided us in the direction of his parked car. âI wish we could go to Vegas,â he announced.
âWhy donât we?â I challenged.
He shook his head. âWe wouldnât make it there until dawn.â
âDawnâs a lovely time to arrive in Vegas,â Mary said. âYou can sleep all day and then be ready for the night.â
âAre we vampires?â I asked, with a small laugh.
âIn another life, yes,â explained Mary. âIn this oneâ¦â
Marco glanced up to the dark, starlit sky and said, âWeâre the ones everybody else wants to be.â
Mary shook a finger at him, reprimanding. âCareful, Marco,â she said. âYou almost sound smug.â
âDo you think they know?â he asked. âAbout how much weâve been through?â
They looked into each otherâs eyes when Mary spoke. âIf they did,â she said, âthey wouldnât care. But our sorrow would ruin the façade.â
âFaçade,â he repeated. âI like that word.â
Mary insisted on sitting in the backseat, but not before pulling me aside. âYou belong up front now,â she explained, in a hushed tone. âNext to Marco. He needs you by his side.â
âBut you were here first,â I reminded her.
âI appreciate your chivalry,â she said. âBut youâre new.â
I slid across the bucket seat and into the shelter of Marcoâs arms. He pulled me closer to him. âThere,â he said. âThatâs better.â
