THE MATCHMAKING GAME: A brand new historical romance novella from bestselling author Donna Hatch.
Rowena’s childhood friend, Evan, has returned home from war a handsome, but mysterious stranger. In an effort to bring happiness to her father, not to mention uncover the Evan she remembers from their youth, Rowena seeks to unite their parents. Who better to match a lonely widow and widower together than their adoring children? Her matchmaking game could help their parents find happiness and draw out her childhood friend buried beneath Evan’s new reserve … or it could break more than one heart.
Rowena pointed her chin at the couple. “Look at her. Look at my papa. I think they have always been fond of one another—they are often near each other. It probably wouldn’t take much on our part to help them realize they would make a perfect match.” Evan lifted a dark brow. “You want my mother to marry your papa?”
“Think about it. They are both widowed. They clearly hold each other in high regard. We’re neighbors, so if they marry, your mother could move in with us with very little fuss.” She faced Evan fully. “Don’t you think my father has much to recommend him?”
“I . . . suppose,” Evan admitted. Rowena glanced her father. Lean of form and handsome of face, he bore a full head of dark hair with only a few faint strands of silver. Ladies found him attractive, didn’t they?
“That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement,” Rowena said wryly. Evan studied her father. “He seems fit. Has a prosperous estate. No known vices.” She almost rolled her eyes at his unromantic analysis. “Do stop gushing. You’ll make me blush.” There. The slightest curving of his mouth. She’d have him grinning like the old Evan any minute. She waved her hand. “Go ahead. Tell me why my plan won’t work. It’s clear you’re not in raptures over it.”
“I have no desire to be a matchmaker.” She waited. “And . . .”
“So, it’s your involvement you take exception to, not their suitability.” He paused. “Noooo.” He drew out the word.
“Then you do think they’d make a good match?” He gave her the look one normally gives to children who are asking a great deal too many questions. “I have not considered the matter.”
“Then it’s high time you did consider it. It would be fun arranging all their meetings and finding new ways to throw them together so they can see they belong together.”
“Fun.” He tasted the word as if he found it bland.
