The Tokyo Cover Girls by Jackie Amsden (The Tokyo Cover Girls , #1) Publication date: April 28th 2016 Genres: Mystery, Young Adult
New York has Jacobs, Paris has Chanel, Milan has Versace and Tokyo has . . . Hello Kitty toilet plungers? With its cute-obsessed catalogue and magazine market, anyone who is anyone knows that modeling in Japan means being at the bottom of the fashion industry. Blake, Jess, and Hailey are doing their best to survive yet another casting where pigtails and toddler-impressions are a must when they stumble upon the opportunity of a lifetime. The prestigious Satsujin company has selected them to compete for a campaign that will transform the winner from commercial nobody to haute couture superstar faster than you can say Vogue Italia.
Of course, nothing is ever what it seems in the fashion world. Just ask all those dead girls . .
Hailey stood in front of her apartment building scanning the street like a lost Chihuahua. A few feet away, Jess leaned against a street sign, her grey tee shirt dress blending into the darkening street. Blake sat on the curb next to her, long legs stretching out from her pleather mini skirt. Both were totally absorbed in their text messages.
It was just past eight p.m. and according to the red card that had arrived the night before, their first challenge was to take place in just a matter of moments. Hailey was totally freaking out. What was this challenge going to be about? Who was going to pick them up? And how were they supposed to dress for something when they didn’t know what it was?
She looked down at the navy blue Jones New York blazer and white Classiques Entier wool trousers she had pulled on. She had only been trying to look more professional like Yuki wanted, but seeing how the others were dressed, Hailey wondered if she had misinterpreted something. Was the neck scarf too much? She tugged at the cloth clinging to her neck.
The truth was, it wasn’t just her wardrobe choice that was making her feel so uncomfortable; it was the competition. She still wasn’t sure if she wanted to be in it. Had the others ever done anything like this before? Were they as nervous as she was? And did they really think that Satsujin was listening to them all the time? She hadn’t said a word to the others about her worries for fear that she would sound like some kind of baby but suddenly she couldn’t hold them in any longer.
Hailey was just about to open her mouth when she heard a soft humming. A cream-colored limousine with polished hubcaps and a sloped roof rolled to a stop in front of them, and a Japanese man in a uniform the same color as the vehicle emerged from the front. He was tall, compared to most of the men she saw in the city, and had to lean forward as he held the passenger door open.
Jackie Amsden worked as a fashion model in China, Japan, and Taiwan before retiring at the age of eighteen after one too many agent threats, nude photo shoot requests, and self-loathing-induced Pocky binges.
