​Irusan – King of Cats

I’m a devoted animal lover. I adore almost all animals, but as much as I love dogs, they seem, to me, to be needy sweethearts. Writers sit at a desk all day. I can’t imagine doing that with a dog staring at me, waiting for me to come play. Cats, therefore, are a writer’s perfect companion animal. They are smart and beautiful, independent, able to fit into most households, and their laziness (so some say) helps them fit into the writer’s solitary lifestyle. As for the laziness part, that takes a while to kick in; I know this from experience. There are, in my household, two lovely boys, the third or fourth set of two felines in my lifetime. One is a friendly and sweet-natured but overactive two-and-a-half year old and the other is a lazy, sleepy twelve year old. Cats mellow out, but not generally until they are upwards of three or four years old.
When I started writing the Lady Anne mysteries, many years ago now, I was looking for characteristics to make a well-rounded woman out of my main character. Lady Anne Addison would be independent, smart, plain, confident and somewhat eccentric. She would be well-read, largely self-educated, with guidance from her erudite father.
I also knew that as far as was possible in her life, Lady Anne would go her own way, defying expectation that she would make a suitable marriage at a suitable age, and so, at about 25, she is independent and able, because of her personal wealth and her father’s indulgence, to order her own life as she wishes.
I gave her a cat, a BIG cat with a big personality, knowing that, as I created him, he would be equally independent with his mistress. He goes with Anne virtually everywhere.
As I cast about for a name for this remarkable feline, I came across a Celtic myth about Irusan, the King of the Cats, said to be as big as an ox. In various relations of the myth he takes to task a bard who insults the cats who have not worked diligently enough to rid Ireland of mice. The cat punishes the poet, and, by some accounts, comes to a bad end himself because of his temper.
Now THAT was a name for a cat, especially the pet of someone as well read and quirky as Anne, and thus Irusan was born, an integral part of the Lady Anne mysteries, Anne’s life, and in Lady Anne and the Haunted Schoolgirl, even a part of the mystery’s solution!
But as with most cats, he has his favorite people. He loves Wee Robbie, Mary’s son (Mary is Anne’s faithful maid). He also adores Osei Boatin, secretary to Anne’s fiancée, Tony, Marquess of Darkefell. And yet he most decidedly does NOT like Tony. Which stands to reason, as Tony is always trying to get Lady Anne to himself. I ask you, what cat is going to put up with that?
