He placed his hands on my arms, leaned down, and brought his face close to mine. Our noses nearly touched, and my heart skipped a beat.
“Not here. Out,” he growled through his teeth.
Nate released me and headed towards the back door. Sighing, I watched him leave, knowing I could either follow him or go home. However, I wanted answers. I wanted to get to know this guy for real after seeing him forever in my dreams. I shrugged and gave the other guys an apologetic smile before leaving through the back door. Outside, the darkness enveloped me, and the distant thumping of bass from inside was only a faint echo. A lantern nearby cast a dim glow, barely illuminating his face. He leaned against the yellow-brown brick wall with the back of his head on the stone and his eyes closed, taking a deep breath. Then, when he sensed me, he opened his eyes, looked at me, and crossed his arms over his chest. Nate radiated strength, reassurance, and imperturbability. I was drawn to this man. He looked so seductive, even more so because he didn’t intend to. Pictures flashed through my mind. Him naked over me, our breaths mingling as he pushed into me. Thinking of my nights with him, I didn’t want to talk. I wanted to taste and feel him at last. I’d waited too long for this to happen. I craved his touch, his lips against mine.
I took a few steps towards him and stopped right before him, only centimetres separating us. On instinct, he touched my arms, slowly stroking my skin. My hands were on his waist, caressing over his stomach up to his chest muscles. It was all too familiar, exactly like in my dreams. Next, his hands would be on my hips, moving to my arse to squeeze my cheeks. I closed my eyes and stood on my tiptoes to reach for his kiss.
“Oh, Nate…” I breathed.
Kiss me, for God’s sake. We’ve done this so often. My breath quickened, and my pulse sped up. Would he kiss me? Did he want me as much as I wanted him? I waited for something to happen, but I felt no more arms around me, no kiss on my lips. Opening my eyes, I saw the battle going on in his mind. What was wrong? Raising my eyebrows, I looked at him. What was his next step? Would he make a move or just stand there for the rest of time? I bit my lower lip, and that triggered him somehow. The next second, I was pressed against the brick wall, his hands on my shoulders, and our bodies separated by his arm’s length.
“What are you doing, witch?” he hissed.
His question pissed me off. Why did he insult me? I wanted a kiss from him, not an organ. For seven agonising years, he had haunted my dreams, a constant reminder of what I could never have. And then, here he was, standing before me in all his glory, finally within my reach. My heart was racing, and my body was on fire with desire. I longed to feel his touch, to have his skin against mine, and to taste his lips on mine. The ache inside me grew stronger with every passing second that we were apart—a longing that consumed me entirely. It was a feeling of desperation, of needing him more than anything else in the world. And now that he was here, I couldn’t bear the thought of letting him go.
“What? Are you kidding me? What does it look like? Playing Scrabble? No, I want your hands on me and your lips on mine. Is that so hard to understand?”
“Are you trying to kill me?” He was peeved at me for some reason. His breathing sped up, and his eyes were fixed on my lips. He swallowed visibly. I could still see the battle going on in his eyes.
“You’re killing me here right now! Are you blind or what? I want you. And don’t give me this rubbish that you aren’t attracted to me!” I practically shouted.
He still had his hands on my shoulders, but I could move my arms and placed them on his chest again. With every other guy, I would have walked away already. I never exposed myself that much and almost begged them to touch me. Nate was different, though. I couldn’t leave that easily. He searched my eyes, and I could no longer conceal my vulnerability behind my aggressive behaviour. Why wouldn’t he kiss me? Did I imagine his attraction, and he had no interest? Would he leave me here for good, and I’d be alone for the rest of my life?
“You really don’t know, do you?” he asked softly as he laid his forehead against mine.
“Know what?”

Interview with Eliza Hampstead, author of the War of the Nephilim series

Interviewer: What inspired you to write this story about Alissia and Nate?

Eliza: I have a deep passion for reading fantasy romance novels and was once an avid reader, devouring two to three books each week. I've always longed for a story like The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, but with more mature characters and a spicier narrative. I'm also a pen-and-paper role player, and at that time, we had a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. My character was an Aasimar (mortals with heavenly power) with black wings, a Paladin skilled in both combat and healing. Her name was Azariel—just like the Azariel in my books. I adored my D&D character and wanted to write a story about her, but I knew I couldn't start with her tale; someone else had to begin. That's when Alissia and Nate came into play. I envisioned a forbidden love story and thought, "What could make this love forbidden?" This led me to the idea that witches and Nephilim were considered toxic to one another and could not be together. Naturally, this has a much larger backstory, and the repercussions of Nate and Alissia's love will significantly impact the magical world, which will unfold throughout the four books of the War of the Nephilim series.

Interviewer: Given that you initially wanted to write about your D&D character Azariel, how did you decide to start with Alissia and Nate’s story instead?

Eliza: I knew I couldn't start with her story, as her focus was on another topic. I needed a narrative that would draw the reader into this world, so Alissia and Nate had to come into play. I wanted a forbidden love story and considered the reasons behind it. That's when I conceived the idea that witches and Nephilim were believed to be toxic to each other and couldn’t be together. Azariel is a side character in book one but will become the main character in book two. She is the best fighter among the Nephilim but struggles with sleeping disorders, and only a human, Andrew (Charlie's overprotective brother), can help her sleep properly. Azariel must learn to trust someone with her heart, even as she fears losing the one she loves.

Interviewer: What was it about the forbidden love between Alissia and Nate that made you feel it was the right starting point for the series?

Eliza: I love the forbidden love trope. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of love that transcends boundaries, whether they are physical, societal, or supernatural. The concept of a witch and a Nephilim—two beings from very different worlds—falling in love and challenging the rules that govern their lives truly resonates with me. I wanted to explore how love can push people to question the status quo and fight for a better future. The supernatural elements allowed me to create a world where these themes could be examined on a larger, more dramatic scale.

Interviewer: How did you go about balancing the romance between Alissia and Nate with the larger supernatural world and its conflicts?

Eliza: The first part of the book focuses on the love story between Nate and Alissia and their journey to be together. This section is character-driven. When the magical community discovers the consequences of their love (I don’t want to spoil anything here), it leads to a war between the vampires and the witches/Nephilim, as the vampires seek power. The second half shifts to a more fantasy and plot-driven narrative, filled with fast-paced action.

Interviewer: It’s interesting how the story shifts from a character-driven romance to a more plot-driven fantasy with intense action. How did you approach this transition in the narrative, and what were some of the challenges you faced in balancing these two aspects of the story?

Eliza: Honestly, I didn’t plan for this when I started writing. I knew what would happen and how the story would progress. For me, the transition felt smooth, as it was a logical consequence of the narrative. When I think about it, the same structure applies in book two, The Nephilim’s Fear, where Azariel and Andrew must find a way to be together, and later, Azariel has to rescue Andrew from the vampires, which is packed with action. In book three, The Nephilim’s Finesse, we follow Victorija, the villain from books one and two. She is captured by the Nephilim, and Raph is tasked with questioning her. In this enemies-to-lovers romance, they fall in love during her imprisonment. In the second part, Victorija must fight alongside the Nephilim to defeat her nemesis, save the world, and atone for her past mistakes.

Interviewer: How do you ensure that each book maintains a fresh and engaging narrative while following this structure, especially as you develop different characters like Azariel and Victorija?

Eliza: The characters take a piece of my heart, soul, and mind. I have a clear image of each one, from their appearance to how they would react in various situations. They live within me, and as I write, their behaviors and traits dictate how the story unfolds. It’s fascinating to place them in specific situations and see how they respond.

Interviewer: Could you give an example of a moment when a character's traits or personality led the story in an unexpected direction or influenced how a particular scene unfolded?

Eliza: In book 4, there’s a scene where Mike, our mischievous and funny Nephilim friend, makes a joke about Victorija. She jumps at him and threatens him. If Raph were in that situation, he would have simply raised an eyebrow at Mike and let him stumble over his words. Nate might feel hurt but would assume it wasn’t meant seriously, so it would be fine. Alissia and Andrew probably wouldn’t have realized it was a joke, as they’d be too busy analyzing data. Azariel, on the other hand, would laugh and make an even sharper joke.

Interviewer: How do you keep these character dynamics consistent throughout the series, especially as they evolve and face new challenges?

Eliza:  I have a clear vision for each character and their journey. I pay close attention to how they’ve changed throughout the series, ensuring their development feels authentic. However, there are moments in book 4 when I think, “This character would have acted differently in an earlier book.” They have truly evolved within their stories. A good example is Nate: in The Nephilim’s Fate, he takes orders without question. By book 4, he is giving orders and standing up to evil demons in Hell, refusing to take their nonsense.

Interviewer: As you’ve developed your characters throughout the series, have you found that their growth reflects any personal experiences or themes from your own life?

Eliza: Every character reflects a part of me or my personal life. Alissia is a scientist like me, and I aspire to be as strong (mentally and physically) as Azariel. When I’m angry at someone, I see traits of Victorija in myself. I’m a geek like Andrew. Some situations are drawn from my own experiences, such as a meeting where Andrew doesn’t get the promotion he deserves. Writing these scenarios helps me channel my emotions, allowing me to release them and feel better afterward.

Interviewer: How do you think this emotional connection to your characters and their stories influences your writing process and the themes you explore in your work?

Eliza: I also draw inspiration from the world around me. I always have my phone handy to jot down thoughts whenever I hear something, read something, or see something that inspires me or sparks an emotion or idea for a scene. Sometimes those ideas linger for months until the right story emerges where that scene fits perfectly.

Interviewer: As you look forward to the future of the War of the Nephilim series and beyond, what are your hopes for both your characters and your writing journey?

Eliza: I hope my readers will love the characters as much as I do. In my writing journey, I aim to improve with every book I write. Each book presents its own challenges, some of which surprise me, while others I set for myself. For book one (The Nephilim's Fate), the challenge was to create enough conflict between the characters. In book two (The Nephilim's Fear), I focused on accurately portraying the relationship between the siblings Charlie and Andrew, since I’m an only child. In book three (The Nephilim's Finesse), I wanted to depict Victorija’s PTSD attacks as realistically as possible. In book four (The Nephilim's Fellowship), I wrote from seven different perspectives. It’s incredibly rewarding when readers praise the dynamic between Charlie and Andrew, and one reader even mentioned that I accurately portrayed her own experiences with PTSD, which truly warms my heart.

Interviewer: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Eliza: I encourage aspiring writers to read as much as they can, pay attention to what they like and dislike in books, and then start writing. It doesn’t have to be perfect; it should be fun and fulfilling.

Interviewer: That's fantastic advice! Thank you so much for sharing your insights, experiences, and passion for your work today. I’m excited to see how your characters continue to grow and what new stories you’ll bring to life in the War of the Nephilim series!

Eliza: Thank you for the wonderful questions! I enjoyed sharing my journey and insights. I hope readers will find as much joy in reading my stories as I do in writing them.

Thank you for your question! Partly. My inspiration also stemmed from a desire to create a world with Nephilim and forbidden love. That was my initial vision. As I developed the world within the book, the theme of true love conquering all became a crucial element of the story!

Reply

10/16/2024 04:56:02 am

Thank you for your question! Typically, the idea for a book begins with a steamy scene. There's often a central conflict between the characters—like in this case, where Alissia and Nate can't even kiss. From there, I asked myself: Why can’t they be together? What will they do about it? This process allows the world and characters to develop until I have a complete story.
