Eleven years after a world war destroyed the consumer-driven, plastic-based existence of 2055, a new order of players jostles for power. Streaky electricity, ravaging drought, a scarcity of food and deadly Monarch butterflies makes for an increasingly desperate situation. Monarch pollen, called butt dust, is both an anesthetic and an addictive drug.

The sequel pits the genetically engineered OctoOne (part octopus, part woman) and her army against The Fountain of Youth compound ruled by an unstable plastic surgeon known as Alpha Plus and his army of mechanical cutting machines. Sharps, protagonist of The Rage Room, returns after a bizarre series of encounters inside the Mainframe, and is reunited with his former cohorts. His mother reinvents herself and eventually emerges as the new leader of a dreamy/nightmarish world.

A twist is that the drought-ridden world, thought by OctoOne to be all-encompassing, is the anomaly. The worlds collide when Mother and Sharps’ children are kidnapped by Alpha Plus and taken to The Fountain of Youth compound, an imaginative take on Hotel California where you can check in anytime, but you can never leave.

The Fountain of Youth compound is a dream come true, until it isn’t. There’s flowing water and beautiful people and beautiful clothes and an incongruous convent where children wear smart uniforms and are tutored by nuns. Lovely, until you discover that the plastic surgeon is mad, and all his creations are duplicate Barbie Dolls, and all his money and power is based on a subterranean sex show streaming from the Mainframe. Alpha Plus’s hitman is a bizarre psychopath aptly named Jinx, an amalgam of killers from across time and a reminder of the perils of time travel.

The novel comes to an epic climax at Carnival and world order is restored. There are happy-ever-afters and a few casualties of war.
A hilarious and at the same time poignant novel, Everything You Dream is Real is filled with delightful puns and ironies, and there is the sobering realization that obsession with appearances, the soul-draining sex-trade, and the thirst for power hold sway in our own world every bit as much as in this dystopian world.
