Caves of Glass
by C.A. Gray
Genre: Epic Fantasy

Picture

The illegitimate son of a peasant, Rion of Tryferos has very limited prospects with only one remarkable talent: when he plays the lyre, he ushers in the supernatural balm of peace to all who hear. This turns out to be his ticket into the palace, where he nightly plays for the restless, rejected king. King Hector of Tryferos is paranoid, because he knows his days on the throne are numbered. What he doesn’t know is that his anointed successor is Rion.

Princess Genevieve is a spare to the throne of Mageia, shunned by all but her mother out of fear of her magical gift: she possesses the power to manipulate the thoughts and desires of those around her. But Ginny would do anything just to be normal. When a fulfilled prophecy of her mother's untimely death also foretells that Ginny will ascend the Mageian throne, Ginny wonders whether she has any control over her own fate at all, or whether everything is predetermined.

Both Rion and Ginny are drawn to the forbidden Caves of Glass at the icy pinnacles that border their two perpetually feuding nations. According to legend, the Caves are either a place of strange forbidden magic, or else a place where all deception is stripped away, leaving only clarity and truth in its wake. As Rion flees for his life and Ginny struggles against her destiny, in the Caves of Glass, they find both each other, and themselves.

Prologue: The Rejected King

“Retreat! Retreat!” shouted Borno, Commander of the Tryferian army.
His knights, those who were still able, obeyed at once. Many of their brothers lay still on Mageian soil, never to rise again.
King Hector waited in the forest for reports of the battle’s outcome, resplendent in his ermine violet robe and heavy gold crown. He didn’t always dress in such finery outside the palace, but this was no ordinary battle. This one would double the size of his borders.
His eyes narrowed when Borno came into view, a barrel-chested warrior with a thick beard and windswept brown hair. His tunic bore the red and gold smock characteristic of the Tryferian military, with a gold cross denoting his rank. The thunder of hooves behind him told the king that this was a full retreat.
Borno shook his head as he gave his report to the king.
“It was an ill-advised massacre, Your Majesty,” Borno panted, “just as Enmai warned us it would be—”
“‘Ill-advised?’” Hector repeated. “‘Ill-advised?’ I was the one to give the order, was I not? Be very careful of your next words, Commander.”
Borno had little patience for this at the moment. He met the king’s gaze evenly.
“Many of our best knights are dead,” he said, barely controlling the accusation in his tone. “Men loyal to you. Enmai told you that Aleph would not give Mageia into your hand, Your Majesty, and that has proven to be true—”
“They are a heathen, evil nation!” cried King Hector, “they worship Mage! How could Aleph not support my conquest? We would teach them the true worship of Aleph—”
A third voice spoke. “It is not for you to question Aleph’s commands.” Both men looked up, to see the prophet Enmai himself standing on a boulder above and behind them. He wore his characteristic brown burlap robe tied with twine around the waist, his long gray-white beard glinting in a shaft of sunlight filtering through the trees. “Do you think Aleph takes pleasure in the slaughter of innocents?” Enmai thundered. “You did not wish to glorify Him, you only wanted to aggrandize yourself and expand your own borders! Instead, for your greed and disobedience, Aleph has rejected you as king over Tryferos.”
The moment Enmai pronounced these words, a storm cloud came out of nowhere, shielding the light of the sun.
“He will instead anoint a man in your place to rule Tryferos, a man who will obey His commands.”
At that exact moment, Hector felt nothing but shock. He continued to stare up at Enmai, who then—vanished. Not into thin air exactly, but Hector could not see where he had gone. He was there one moment, and then, not.
Behind him, Borno cleared his throat. It was then that Hector remembered that he had witnesses. Many of them.
His entire remaining army had just witnessed his rejection as their king.

C.A. Gray is a Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD), with a primary care practice in Tucson, Arizona. She has always been captivated by the power of a good story, fictional or otherwise, which is probably why she loves holistic medicine: a patient’s physical health is invariably intertwined with his or her life story, and she believes that the one can only be understood in context with the other. For freebies, giveaways, and new release info, sign up for her newsletter at http://eepurl.com/F3rof.

Her favorite fictional tales have always been epic battles of good versus evil, with a strong tendency towards parable. An idealist herself, she has always been convinced that these stories have something deeply true to tell us about the human condition, and that is why we love them so much… or at least that’s why she does.

She still wants to be everything when she grows up. She moonlights as a college chemistry teacher (she has a degree in biochemistry, with minors in Spanish and Creative Writing), does theater when she gets the chance, sings, plays piano, was once a personal trainer and in coffee shop management. She is blessed with exceptionally supportive family and friends, and thanks God for them every single day.
