Carla Howatt
lives in Alberta, Canada where she helped raise four children, two husbands and a few pugs. A communicator at heart, Carla is also a proud introvert, port inhaler and dark chocolate hunter.

Her pets Carrera, Mercedes, Enzo and Mufasa keep her laughing and her husband keeps her smiling.

Montreal-born, Edmonton-raised, Monique M. MacDonald started writing at her grandmother's kitchen table the moment she could scribble with a crayon. This eventually led to using a keyboard as a columnist for several newspapers and magazines.
She writes like she lives, with a sense of humor.

A Quick Q&A with the Authors of Fowl Play,
Monique MacDonald and Carla Howatt

What is something unique/quirky about you?

Carla: I’m way more progressive than my age would suggest.

Monique: I can touch my nose with my tongue. I also love ‘Dad Jokes’ but I take them to the next level by making them ‘Mom Jokes’. Much funnier.

Tell us something really interesting that’s happened to you!

Carla: I have done a lot of travelling and had some great experiences. Such as taking a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, or running a half marathon through Ankor Wat in Cambodia.

Monique: I was the supporting actress in the award winning Canadian motion picture ‘Another Planet’.

What are some of your pet peeves?

Carla: Having to wait for things. I am very impatient. If I decide to do something, I wan to do it now, not an hour from now. I also detest close-minded or rude people.

Monique: Rudeness, disrespect of others. And the expression ‘Excuse my French’. That last one reflects the two first one.

Where were you born/grew up at?

Carla: I always say I was born in the oil fields and raised in the wheat fields of Alberta. I was born in an oil town in Northern Alberta and spent most of my childhood in a small rural Alberta town near Edmonton.

Monique: Ville Saint-Laurent in the Greater Montreal area is where I was born and lived until I was 13. Edmonton, Alberta is where I lived most of my life afterwards.

If you knew you’d die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

Carla: I would spend my time with my children. I would tell them how much I love them and then I would make sure they knew where the will, insurance info and banking passwords were located! I’m a blend of practical and sentimental.

Monique: My day would be spent with my husband and my family. There’s nothing more important. In the end, all there is left is love.

Who is your hero and why?

Carla: My hero is my mother. She lived at a time when women didn’t have the options available to them that I did as I was growing up. She instilled in me confidence and a belief that I could do anything I wanted to. She did all of this while at the same time struggling to believe it for herself.

Monique: I have two heros. The first is my mother who was a diabetic from the age of 19 and faced so many health problems all of her life. Problems that would have destroyed most of us. She showed me that life is what you make of it, not what it makes of you. The second one is my youngest daughter Naomi, for having chosen to be true to herself.

What kind of world ruler would you be?

Carla: I would be a benevolent dictator. If people would just listen to me life would be so much more pleasant, I promise!

Monique: I would be a terrible world ruler. I would see everyone’s point of view, I would be fair to a fault, and would never be able to make any decision.

What are you passionate about these days?

Carla: I am passionate about mental health reform, and disability rights. I have a strong sense of justice and a desire to see things carried out in a fair way.

Monique:LGBTQ issues. Why can’t people let people be? Everyone has the right to choose who they want to love, be who they are. It’s nobody else’s business. There’s no threat in that. Nobody wants to ‘corrupt’ anyone. I could go on and on but that’s for another blog.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

Carla: A glass of red and some dark chocolate both consumed while chatting with my husband.

Monique: There’s nothing like sitting by the fireplace and petting my rescue dog while listening to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

How to find time to write as a parent?

Carla: I waited until they grew up and left home!

Monique: Even though I have a man-child at home, the babes I gave birth too have flown the coop. I give the man-child chores and he disappears. He works outside the home during the week so it’s usually not a problem.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!

Carla: Complex, passionate, loyal, and inquisitive.

Monique: Diplomatic, funny, empathic, strong-willed, creative.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Carla: That’s a hard question, I think I have always considered myself a writer. I remember the first time I came home from school with my Dick and Jane book. I was amazed and in awe that a whole new world had opened up to me. From there I was a reader and soon a writer.

Monique: From the moment I could write, sitting at my grand-mother’s kitchen table. She encouraged me to write poetry and short stories. I’ve also thought of myself as a writer.

Do you have a favorite movie?

Carla: Forrest Gump. I love the message that we all have the potential to change the world.

Monique: It’s too hard to pick just one movie. The Princess Bride and Monty Python and the Holy Grail are tied for that honor.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

Carla: An elephant. Because I would love to never forget anything!

Monique: The Magpie. It’s incredibly smart, loyal, mates for life, and loves shiny objects.
