Elice stood, jaw set and shoulders back. “I don’t blame you for anything that’s happened. You know that, right?”

“I love you,” she added, her voice a trembly whisper. “You can’t hide from that, no matter how far away you go.”
“I’m not hiding! I’m trying to guarantee your safety!”
“By leaving Freeland? By leaving me? That’s crazy!”
It had been crazy to let himself get close to her, crazier still letting her get close to him.
“Maybe so,” he admitted, “but I’m also dangerous.”
