A Ghost of a Chance
A Ghost Series Novel Book 1
by Minnette Meador

Genre: A Spooky Romantic Comedy of Disasters

Picture
Keenan is just your typical, everyday graphic designer. He eats, he drinks, he loves... and he lives with hundreds of pesky ghosts that only he can see. They make his life interesting in a Chinese curse sort of way. Enter Isabella, a witty, smoking hot co-worker who turns him into mush every time he gets near her. He's got it bad. But how can he win her over when he knows his fun-loving “friends” won’t leave it alone? Introduce a horny succubus who visits him on a nightly basis, an angry entity that's trying to kill him, and a burly city cop who wants to arrest him, and you have a comedy of disasters that takes this reluctant psychic and turns him into an even more reluctant hero.

As he passed through, twenty or so ghosts littered his living room, watching the last few minutes of the news. Keenan pulled air into his lungs before picking up the remote.
They were costing him a fortune. The TV, the radio, and even his computers were always on. Lights went off and on constantly. The heat would soar to eighty degrees in the middle of the summer and then plunge to fifty when the winter freeze set in. He couldn’t keep any pets; the instant they came into the house, they hissed or yelped in terror and ran away. The neighborhood was full of cats that had once belonged to Keenan.
He couldn’t keep girlfriends, either. The closer they got, the more convinced they were that he was on drugs, a serial killer, or terminally cracked. He hadn’t had a girl at his house in years; for some reason, they got all heebie-jeebies on him when things started flying around or icy blasts of air unexpectedly lifted their skirts. One girl even had her panties removed, but not by Keenan. He was in the kitchen at the time.
Friends? Forget it. They tended to search for the exit when he told them he saw dead people… and not in the good way. Moviemakers had it all wrong. These weren’t people who wanted release; they were freeloaders who wanted nothing more than to torture the living, especially those who could see them. Keenan had lost count of how many pranks he had endured over the years. Somewhere in the thousands, he was sure.
When Keenan clicked off the power to the TV, the crowd of specters growled em mass. The box sizzled back on. Keenan held the remote defiantly toward the set and banged the power button again. It hissed off. Three male ghosts, a solid and two transes, pounded on their chests like apes, and the TV came back on.
“Leave the God damned thing off,” he bellowed, thumb wrestling the remote one last time. The few spirits visible faded away, but not before four of them flipped him off. A barrage of couch pillows and cushions appeared out of nowhere, knocking him to the ground.
When Keenan shot back to his feet, the ghosts were gone.

Please tell us a little about yourself.
Somewhere between thirty and dust...red hair, blue eyes...six kids, one slightly used husband, and any number of pets from time to time... wanttabe hippy... wanttheirmoney yuppie... pro musician and actress for 20 Years... native Oregonian... lover of music, beauty, and all things green. Willing slave to the venerable muse. I currently reside in Lincoln City, Oregon with my husband, having replaced the children with one dog and two cats. The dog, Milo, pretty much runs the show.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I penned the much-anticipated Star Trek episode when I was 8. It never got picked up, but it gave me the eternal bite of the muse. She has abused me ever since.

Please share some juicy details about A GHOST OF A CHANCE.
Juicy, huh… The sex scenes made one site expel it from their romance side delegating it to the erotic version of the blog. Those who try to corrupt me to write erotica had a party. ~g~ Ghosts and demons and angels, oh, my! Sexy story of ghosts meet boy, boy meets girl, boy meets succubus, boy loses girls, boy gets girl back, boy saves the world, ghosts rejoice. Loads of twists and turns… you’ll never see it coming! Everyone says it’s very funny.

Was there a character you enjoyed writing the most?
I think Keenan would have to be it. I went totally from his POV, which means you won’t know what’s happening until he does. That made it very exciting to write and tough at the same time. I mean, building in foreshadowing was a killer; how do you put it in when the main character hasn’t a clue. Keenan has been living with hundreds of ghosts since he was a teenager and they make his life a living hell, but for all of that he grows to appreciate them in the end.

Do you have a special formula for creating character names?
I like sounds first and meaning later. The names usually either just come to me or I look them up. For example, Keenan means little ancient one. This is kind of an inside joke readers will get when they read the book. Isabella, of course, means God’s promise and she certainly is.

What is your writing process like?
I used to be a pantster, someone who writes by the seat of her pants. I am more of a plotter now. I usually use OneNote to roughly outline the story, build my characters using character sheets, select location, time period, etc. and put as much of it in the notebook as possible. Then I start writing. I walk a lot and think things through, or I lay down and things usually come to me then. People look at me strangely since I’m usually running dialogue between the two characters verbally while I’m walking. I’ve grown to love it. I usually write a chapter and then go back and do a couple of reviews, then go onto the next chapter. I go back through the book as I move along; that keeps the story fresh for me. Then I edit it about a dozen times, send it off to my critique partner and beta readers, get their input, make changes as appropriate and then send it to my editor, who makes more changes. When we agree on all of them, it goes to a copy editor who takes care of all the technical stuff, typos, spacing, etc.

Do you write other genres besides paranormal romance?
I am called the Schizophrenic Muse for a very good reason: I’ve never met a genre I didn’t like. To date I have published 2 epic fantasies, 3 historical romances, a children’s book, three humorous essays, a paranormal romantic comedy, and an urban fantasy thriller… oh, and newspaper articles. I love to write in different genres; I think each challenge keeps my writing chops fresh. I read many different genres and love them all. My secret passion is mystery, especially Nero Wolfe books, so I’ve got a plan for a series of mysteries based off my sister-in-law who passed a few years ago. She had cerebral palsy but was simply amazing. She had an identic memory and was able to tell you things that happened years before with every detail… not to mention she was the kindest most loving being I’ve ever known. I’m basing my protagonist from her, and her older sister called the Mary Mysteries. This is my way of honoring her memory. Can’t wait to get started.

What inspired you to pen this novel?
I've always wanted to write a comedy, and this was a natural. Keenan is such a sympathetic character, as a writer, you really want to get him in as much trouble as you can, just to see how he digs his way out.

What inspired your book to be a series?
It was a natural decision. Since the cambion has been conceived here, it was natural to follow the creature through his life.
"The succubus seduces a man, collects his seed, and transfers it to an incubus who changes it and delivers it to a human female. Seems to me that would just produce your garden-variety human offspring, but apparently not. The child born to the woman is called a cambion.” A shadow of a warm smile touched Reggie's ghostly lips. “Now, these little fellows are really something… ugly as sin when born, no breath or heartbeat, but it runs around like the very dickens for the first seven years or so. Then it becomes increasingly difficult to differentiate one from a human. A cambion eventually becomes devilishly cunning with the face of an angel. Persuasive too. Can talk a saint into dropping his drawers on Sunday and a nun into giving up her habit.” A GHOST OF A CHANCE - Chapter Three - Imbibing Spirits

How difficult is it to write a series?
Series are always difficult, I think. This is my third and it might be a little easier than the last two. You must think of it as a very long book.

Who is your favorite character?
Which one would you most likely invite to dinner? I love Keenan, but I think the most interesting character is his best friend, Reggie. He’s smooth, he's English, he's sexy, and he's a ghost.

How did you come up with the title for your series?
The original working title was Keenan's Dilemma, but I didn't think that caught the spirit (excuse the pun) of the book. So, I came up with a list of alternatives and ran them by my friends at Rose City Romance. A Ghost of a Chance was the winner by a large margin.

Fantasy or Horror?
Fantasy

Day or Night?
Night

Favorite Drink?
Coffee

Favorite Movie?
Ghost Busters

What is a must have to write?
I've never met a genre I didn't like

If you could possess a supernatural power, what would it be and why?
Telekinetics - I'd love to be able to fly!

Favorite Book?
Sherlock Holmes

Favorite Author?
Ray Bradbury

Sometimes while reading a book we visualize a certain actor/actress playing the part. If your book were being made into a movie, which actor or actresses do you see playing the part(s)?
Keenan - Keenan Michael Keys (ironic, no?)
Isabella - Jessica Alba
Constance - Wanda Sykes
Reggie - Jude Law

What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to know about you?
I was a professional singer for about 25 years. That’s why I work music into almost everything I write.

What is the craziest thing you've ever done?
Survival training at the top of Mt. Hood for three days with nothing but a knife.

If someone could describe you in one word, what would it be?
Peacemaker

Where is your favorite place to read?
In bed, hands down.

Other than writing, what are some of your passions in life?
Music has always been a passion of mine and I was a professional for many years. I am retired from that life now but love to listen to different kinds of music. I am currently in love with Imogene Heap, Josh Groban, Technoshark, and Charlotte Church, especially if the music is funky. My other passion is butt dancing in my chair while I write. ~G~

What can readers expect next from you?
I have several books coming out in the next two years:

Phantom Hearts - Book II in the Ghost Series. Dyna is having a bad day... a really bad day. Her house is now filled with ghosts, the neighborhood association is trying to get her evicted, and she just found out she's pregnant with a demon child. To top everything off, a handsome cop thinks he can make it go away, but all he is doing is making it worse! What's a girl to do?

The Pirate Prince - Hasani has a reputation to uphold as the world's greatest pirate; but that's hard to do when you're wasting away in a Syrian jail for making love to one of the Parthian king's daughters. For the first time in his life his luck has run out and he faces the very real possibility of losing his head for good this time. When a mysterious woman shows up and helps him escape, he falls in love for the first time. The problem is... she is taken prisoner and swept away to Egypt, the last place he wants to be. Will he risk his life and riches to save her or follow old habits and simply walk away. There is something about this girl...

*Wy'east - Paranormal - When a mysterious billionaire blackmails a well-known psychiatrist to leave his home half naked in the middle of the night, kidnaps a crazy woman right out of a high security hospital and brings them together to a mansion hidden in the snow topped peaks, what they accomplish together will not only change their lives forever, but the future of the entire human race. Book I of the Metanoia Immortal series.

*Haunted Hearts - Book III in the Ghost Series. He's suave, he's debonair, he can say or do no wrong, the ladies love him, and life couldn't be any sweeter. That is until he finds out he's the devil's love child and strange things start happening around him. Enter a sexy, snoopy female reporter who not only seems immune to his charms but does everything she can to double his trouble. He simply can't resist her and that's where the fun begins. Will he fight the evil deeds blooming in his head or will he finally succumb to his father's wishes and "join" the family business. Only a crazy girl knows... and she's not talking.

*Arpeggios In The Darkness - Sci-Fi YA - It's hard being the first half-Alien/half-Human hybrid... Your mom and dad are gone all the time, the paparazzi follow you everywhere, and you find out your voice can kill. What's a girl to do?

*Lord Bennett's Inn - A Ghost Story - Recovering from the loss of her twin boys to a plane crash, Meg Smith and her husband buy an old mansion in Bandon, Oregon to fix up as a bed and breakfast. But when she arrives she find out they already have guests. Will her husband believe her... or have her committed?

STARSIGHT SERIES:
The God Wars (Prequel) - A civil war breaks out in the universe... a war between the gods. Will Sirdar and his powerful rebels survive the wrath of the Bureaucrats or will millions die condemning Sirdar to a life in hell?

The Restless Seed (Sequel) - Joshan's son and Trenara's daughter are fated to bear a new savior to rescue existence, so say the powerful gods that rule their universe. The only problem is...no one told them...
