Behind the Glass
State Street Series Book 1 by Kristen Morgen Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Rebecca Jordan’s life is simple, disciplined and uncomplicated, at least on the surface. Then she meets a handsome stranger/secret admirer named Michael Vale one fateful late night at a bookstore café. As a focused but struggling photographer with a passion for art, her outwardly happy world is turned upside down during this life-changing encounter when she quickly realizes she has met her soul mate. The undeniable attraction between them and their intense, immediate connection seems picture perfect as they discuss the shop’s local artwork, until Rebecca abruptly ends the chance meeting with no explanation.
Betraying Brett, her loyal, loving boyfriend is something she can never bring herself to do. Driven by a strong moral code and molded by divorced parents and a tumultuous childhood, she struggles to stay away from Michael, but fate and circumstance intervene, bringing them back together time and time again. As much as she resists, there is no denying her true feelings for him and the simple fact that Michael understands her in a way Brett never has. Michael proves to be everything she’s ever wanted, but remains just out of her reach.
Behind the Glass tells the story of Michael and Rebecca’s extraordinary love and the many unconventional stages their relationship must go through. Their morals and their faith in true love and in each other will be put to the test as they learn that meeting one’s soul mate does not come without obstacles.
This very moment was something she had been secretly dreaming about for weeks, yet this was the last scenario in the world she had anticipated. Through a series of bizarre circumstances, she and Michael were now finally alone together.
She could feel his eyes on her from across the room and wanted to turn around to face him, but had no idea what she would say. She had a multitude of questions for him and her emotions ran wild just being alone in his presence again.
Luckily, after a few moments, he made the first move.
He slowly crossed the kitchen to where she stood and paused directly behind her. She stopped washing the pot in her hand and slowly closed her eyes, inhaling his wonderful scent. She could feel his body heat at her back as her heart raced.
He stood in place for a few moments before he spoke and she wondered what he would do or say next. The sheer anticipation gave her goose bumps.
“I…” She flinched slightly as his voice broke the silence. “I’ll get the dishes from the dining room for you.”
Clearly struggling with restraint himself, he reluctantly walked into the adjacent room, collected a handful of dishes, and brought them to the counter next to her. He took another step closer and stopped next to her, just inches away. She could feel his eyes on her again, as her heart pounded.
She turned off the water and faced him, her eyes slowly looking up into his. She had once again forgotten how much taller he was. His massive stature, his very presence near her, made her heart race with anticipation. Quietly looking down at her, he smiled.
There were an infinite number of things to say to him at this moment but nothing immediately came to mind. All she could do was smile up at him contently.
Pure happiness filled her heart.
“So…” he began.
Before she could stop herself, she interrupted him mid-sentence.
“Why are you here?” she asked softly, unable to release herself from his powerful gaze. The way he looked at her seemed to be affecting her normally logical thought process. This was apparently the first question that popped into her mind and now, impossible to retract.
“Here in the kitchen?” he teased, smiling.
“Here at Claire’s house,” she clarified.
He sighed and looked down for a moment, then back at her.
“Weakness on my part,” he admitted.
Claire’s persistence had obviously worked.
“She’s hard to resist, I suppose,” she rolled her eyes slightly.
He gave her a confused look.
“Claire. She can be incredibly tenacious.”
She had to give Claire credit for knowing just how to use her alluring ways to get what she wanted.
His puzzled expression softened into a smile, as if something amused him. He shook his head and chuckled softly.
“Why are you laughing?”
She felt as if she had missed the punch line to a joke.
“Me? What about me?”
“Rebecca, I didn’t come here tonight… for Claire.”
Kristen Morgen is a contemporary romance author and a licensed architect with her own architectural firm. A creative spirit, she can’t remember a time in her life when she didn’t crave designing, creating, discovering, and using her imagination in some way.
Her romance writing interests may seem rather different from her daily career, where she focuses on designing homes, but all good architects are, at heart, just artists creating something imagined onto paper. The two practices and creative processes balance each other well.
Kristen was an avid reader from an early age, and it was her love for the romance genre, her favorite guilty pleasure, that encouraged her to hone her passion for writing. She loves the art of shaping words and sentences into relatable stories while creating rich characters for her readers to connect with.
Her debut novel ‘Behind the Glass’ explores relationships and the little reasons people fall in love with each other while uncovering deeper truths.
Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, she currently resides in Connecticut with her husband and two daughters. When she’s not designing homes, she dedicates her free time to her second novel and reads almost anything she can get her hands on.
