Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Truth, like love, isn't always obvious.

Seventeen-year-old Ruby Brooks has never had a boyfriend. After moving to small-town La Luna, New Mexico following her mother’s untimely death, boys aren’t even on her radar. Ruby just wants to forget the last horrible year and blend in. But when she discovers an ancient pueblo ruin in the forest behind her house, and meets Ezra, a bitter recluse whose once-perfect face was destroyed in an accident he won’t talk about; Angel, La Luna’s handsome sheriff’s deputy, and Leo, a stranger who only appears near the ruin, Ruby finds herself teetering between love, mystery, and other worlds. What happened to Ezra’s face? And why is she so attracted to the one boy in town everyone despises? As Ruby unravels her own connections to both Ezra and the pueblo ruin, she’ll learn surfaces are deceiving. Especially in the heart of New Mexico, where spirits and legends aren’t always just campfire stories.

Set against a Northern New Mexico backdrop, Between Wild and Ruin is a young adult coming of age story that captures the wild and whimsical pulse of New Mexico through the eyes of teens Ruby Brooks, Angel Ruiz, and Ezra Lucero. The first book in the Wild and Ruin series, Between Wild and Ruin explores the time-tested credo ‘never judge a book by its cover’ through a paranormal lens, weaving Puebloan and Hispanic folklore and Southwest cultural narratives into tightly written, high-concept fiction ‘brimming with mystery, intrigue,’ and as Kirkus Reviews puts it, an “intriguing historical drama and an over-the top quadrangle romance.”

After walking through dense stands of pine trees, I follow the remnants of what may have been a trail toward the top of the mountain. Higher up, the pines and junipers dappling the mountainside grow taller, but there aren’t as many. As they thin, small gusts of wind whistle through the forest, echoing through the trees. Otherwise, the forest is completely silent.
Closer to the top of the mountain, the rocky ground levels off and the land spreads across a plateau below the mountain’s peak. Unlike the forest, the plateau is more like a jungle, marked by thick hanging moss and clusters of tall, unidentifiable conifers. Trees stand like sentries several rows deep. Beyond them, fallen logs lie scattered among overgrown shrubs and boulders in circular bands like rings on a tree. I walk through it all, making my way past thick brush into a clearing.
Fresh sap and damp earth assault my nose. Under bright sunlight, large, rough-cut slabs of glittery rock blanket the otherwise bare field. Some lie stacked on top of each other like the crumbling remains of a building. Awestruck, I circle the structure, running my fingers over what looks like a ruin.
“Incredible, isn’t it?”
A voice behind me sends my heart racing toward my throat. I jump, whipping around to find a young man leaning casually against a pine near the clearing’s perimeter, looking off to his left as though listening for something.
Even in the shade, his face glows. He smiles, showing off teeth that gleam like snowflakes between perfect lips. Hair as dark as Liddy’s French roast coffee falls around his face in unruly waves. His features are angular but refined, and his high, rounded cheeks soften the striking juxtaposition.
I blink, then blink again. Ruby. I rub my eyes. You’re hallucinating. But he’s still there, staring at me.
While I gawk, he pushes himself off the tree. “Not many people make it up here.” He smiles broadly.
A soft, purple-hued halo circles his golden irises, catching fire in the sunlight. They settle on me, and my heart stops, completely paralyzed by his faultless storybook features.
I exhale, trying to swallow inconspicuously. “It’s definitely a hike.”
“Who are you?”
“Who am I?” I sputter. “Who are you?”
“Leo.” He grins.
“I’m Ruby.”
“Ruby.” My name rolls off his tongue with a smooth “R” and a musical lilt. Somehow, he even manages to make it sound appealing. “First time up?”
“Yes. We just moved to La Luna.”
“La Luna,” he repeats. “Welcome.”
“Thanks,” I mumble. Earth to Ruby, I mentally smack myself. Since when has any boy made you senseless?
“You okay?” He smiles like he knows I’m not. Like he knows why I’m not. “Do you want to sit down? The altitude can be a bitch if you’re not used to it.”
“No. I mean, yes, I’m fine. No, I don’t want to sit down. You just really startled me. You should announce yourself next time.”
“Next time?”
“Next time you sneak up on somebody.”
Leo raises a perfect dark eyebrow. “But then it wouldn’t be sneaking, would it?”
My cheeks flush, and I suddenly want to drop through a hole in the ground. I choke out, “Ummm,” and something incoherent and then stare at my toes like they hold the keys to my future.

Tell us a little about Between Wild and Ruin?
Set against a Northern New Mexico backdrop, Between Wild and Ruin is a young adult paranormal romance-slash-urban fantasy that captures the wild and whimsical pulse of New Mexico, through the eyes of its characters Ruby Brooks, Angel Ruiz, and Ezra Lucero. The first book in the Wild and Ruin series, Between Wild and Ruin explores the time-tested credo ‘never judge a book by its cover’ through a paranormal lens, weaving Puebloan, Mexican, and Hispanic folklore and Southwest cultural narratives into tightly written, high-concept fiction ‘brimming with mystery, intrigue,’ and as Kirkus Reviews puts it, an “intriguing historical drama and an over-the top quadrangle romance.”

I’m a bit of a (wannabe) armchair philosopher, and I really tried to subtly question concepts like ‘truth,’ ‘meaning,’ and ‘reality’ throughout the plot. Ultimately, I also wanted the book’s characters to be walking around wondering, “Who am I really?” in a way that caught my readers up in the mystery just as thoroughly. In that vein, on its face at least, Between Wild and Ruin is also a bit of a Beauty and the Beast story. In fact a lot of readers have drawn parallel references to that specific fairytale.

I’ll include the copy from the book’s back jacket below, but rather than give the plot away, I’ll just sum up the rest by saying that the book’s title is pretty apt. Overall, the story is as much about wild spaces, feelings, and people, as it is plot-driven. Plus the plot involves an old pueblo ruin. And Ruby and Ezra are caught between choices about their lives, the nature of reality, and each other, that could literally lead to ruin.

From the back-jacket copy:

What inspired you to write Between Wild and Ruin?
My inspiration for Between Wild and Ruin, which is my first published novel, and actually the seventh novel I’ve written, is pretty simple. I fell in love with the Glorieta Pass and the Pecos Pueblo here in northern New Mexico after exploring the area, and desperately wanted to write a story that took place there. I’m a place-centric person, and often fall for scenery, land, and the feel of a location, and end up wanting to write a novel about an area long before I figure out the plot or story. In that way, my story’s setting is often as much a character as the people, which is definitely the case in Between Wild and Ruin.

Between Wild and Ruin’s actual plot though, the short answer is that it initially evolved over a sleepless night. I’m an insomniac, and like a lot of writers, tell myself stories about things that interest me in order to turn off my mind and fall asleep. I hate to being boring, but plot-wise, this was one of them.

What can we expect from you in the future?
Aside from working on Between Wild and Ruin’s sequel, Wild Open Faces, I'm currently working with a publisher on a YA contemporary/sci-fi mashup I pitched as 'Pump Up the Volume' meets 'Close Encounters of a Third Kind.' On the side, I’ve also been working on a novel adaptation of one of my short-stories that took a first-place prize in fiction a couple years back, about a young woman who travels across the U.S. on a Greyhound bus robbing mini-marts (you can find that one on line at: https://www.sfreporter.com/news/coverstories/2017/11/29/writing-contest-winners/). Like Between Wild and Ruin, the story mostly takes place in New Mexico, and I guess I imagine it as this maybe-romantic, definitely gritty YA neo-western. Other than that, I've got another two books outlined and ready to go, and a ton of promotional work for Between Wild and Ruin to get ahead of.

Can you tell us about your main characters in Between Wild and Ruin — what makes them tick?

Ruby Brooks -- Eighteen-year-old junk food fan and artist, Ruby Brooks, was born in Los Angeles on Halloween. After her model mother’s questionable suicide, Ruby moves from Los Angeles to small town La Luna, New Mexico with her aunt Liddy. Formerly a straight-A student, Ruby has to repeat senior year in La Luna at Pecos High, in order to hold on to her spot at a West Coast college after dropping the ball when her mother died. Ruby doesn’t know who her father is. She’s sure her mother knew, but her mother always refused to admit it.

Ruby never really got along with her mother, and because of it, is sensitive about both her mother’s death and appearances in general. She hates looking in the mirror and often ignores or discounts beautiful things, worried if she acknowledges appearances, it’ll mean she’s more like her mother than she’d like to admit — i.e. superficial. Because Ruby is so hung up on appearances, she also almost immediately alienates Ezra, former hot-boy in residence who was disfigured in an accident, before eventually befriending him.

Ruby is also a thinker; she grapples with big questions, including wondering whether or not she’s shut her heart down preemptively before she can get close to anyone, to stop herself from feeling abandoned all over again after her mother’s death. An avid hiker, Ruby explores the mountains behind her house when she needs to think and ends up discovering an ancient pueblo ruin. She also meets Leo, whom she only ever runs into in the forest near the ruin and parts of the pass. Leo is preternaturally gorgeous, and though Ruby tries to fight it, she finds him captivating. Leo claims the Pueblo ruin is a gateway to another world, and after only a couple of visits, Ruby finds herself inexplicably drawn to the area and the mystery it presents, not to mention the opportunity to run into Leo again. But Ruby is also sharp; she senses something is off with both Leo and the ruin and starts to think it may have something to do with her. The less things make sense, the more Ruby is determined to solve the mysteries that senselessness presents.

While Ruby’s unconventional friendship with Ezra grows, and her suspicions regarding Leo and the ruin bloom, she also finds herself attracted to, and growing close to Angel, La Luna’s handsome Sherriff’s deputy, which causes all kinds of unfamiliar emotional turmoil. Especially because, before La Luna, Ruby had never been in love; she never really even dated (she didn’t want to). On top of that, as Ruby continues to dig deeper into the pueblo mystery, she comes to believe the ruin may actually be more than just a pile of crumbling adobe blocks; that it may indeed be a gateway to another world and may hold clues to her mother’s death. Ruby is both stubborn and resolute, and as the story progresses, she becomes increasingly more determined to uncover the truth about the Glorieta pass, how it relates to her mother, Ezra’s accident, and Leo’s identity.

Favorite Food: Cheetos, Oreos, and Pizza
Favorite Color: Purple
Favorite Music Genre: Alternative
Favorite Clothing item: Hiking Boots
Biggest Fear: Coming off as superficial
Dream Job: Anthropologist or Artist
Hobbies: Painting
Best Qualities: Loving, thoughtful, and introspective
Worst Qualities: Sometimes clueless and a little self-centered

Ezra Lucero -- Twenty-year-old Ezra is Native American, both Jemez and Navajo (with some mix of Hispanic as well, like numerous New Mexicans), and grapples with the traditions and lore his grandfather passed down about his family’s Native American clan and background. Ezra’s father died when Ezra was a young teen. Ezra’s mother moved away from La Luna to the Jemez Pueblo after Ezra left for college. Ezra’s family house sits just outside of La Luna in the Glorietta Pass and has been passed down on Ezra’s mother’s side from generation to generation since it was deeded to his family as part of a Spanish land grant in the sixteen hundreds. Ezra also grew up in La Luna, New Mexico. He attended Pecos High with Angel, and on the surface at least, was La Luna’s resident popular, albeit conceited jock.

After Ezra’s first year of college back East, Ezra returned to La Luna when his face was disfigured in a mysterious accident he refuses to talk about. Settling back in La Luna, he holed up in his house in the pass (not too far from Ruby’s new house), and rarely ventures into town. Now that he’s back, Ezra is a loner. He’s also La Luna’s current pariah. A position that’s aggravated by the fact that Ezra’s family had already been the source of town gossip for generations — gossip about how Ezra’s family are allegedly witches.

Ezra was always caustic, reactive, and conceited, but his accident brought out the worst in him, and most town folk find him unpleasant to be around. They stare at him when he comes into La Luna, which makes Ezra angry and often sets him off. Ezra is too aware of how people see him now compared to how he was ‘before,’ and like Ruby, grapples with his feelings about appearances and his relationship to beauty. Though Ezra did go off to college, his father was a carpenter, and when Ezra returns to La Luna, he returns to the family business; he enjoys restoring things and working with his hands.

Favorite Food: Mac and Cheese from a box and diner burgers
Favorite Color: Black and anything checkered
Favorite Music Genre: Country
Favorite Clothing Item: Straw Cowboy hat
Biggest Fear: Being alone
Dream Job: Astronomer or Architect
Hobbies: Reading
Best Qualities: Whip-smart, loyal, secretly wants to be better
Worst Qualities: Conceit, anger, insecurity

Angel Ruiz — Twenty-one-year old Angel is Mexican American, born in New Mexico and raised in La Luna. He attended Pecos High with Ezra, but never liked him. Angel and Ezra do not get along. After graduating from Pecos High, Angel joined La Luna’s Sherriff’s office (as deputy Sheriff), where his uncle Torrance is the town Sherriff. Angel is a genuinely nice guy who is invested in the community and helping La Luna’s town folk. His father left him and his mother when he was a toddler, so his uncle Torrance helped raised him. Angel is very close to both Torrance and his mom, Viviane, who own and runs a restaurant in nearby Santa Fe. Traditionally handsome, Angel played football in high school and is a hot commodity locally but is not at all conceited about it. He believes in true love and falls hard after he meets Ruby. He’s determined to do right by her and wants to protect her after learning about her mother’s death.

Favorite Food: Tamales, Green Chile, and Huevos Rancheros
Favorite Color: Green
Favorite Music Genre: Pop
Favorite Clothing item: Slim-fit button-downs
Biggest Fear: None
Dream Job: Sherriff
Hobbies: Anything Sporty
Best Qualities: Genuinely nice, kind, fiercely loyal
Worst Qualities: Bossy, nosy, overly confident

Leo — Gorgeous Leo is a bit of a mystery. The only clear things about him are that he hails from a Native American background, grew up somewhere in the pass, and is extraordinarily full of himself. The only time Ruby runs into Leo, is in the more forested areas of the pass, usually near the ruin. Leo is obviously smart and interesting, but equally cocky bordering on off-putting. He’s obviously attracted to Ruby but while clearly attempting to woo her, also seems uninterested in taking her out or meeting her in public. Leo also often comes off like he’s toying with her.

Ruby isn’t sure what Leo’s end-game is, but she does start to worry Leo may be dangerous. Particularly since no one — not Angel, Ezra, Torrance, or her friends at Pecos high — seem to know who he is. At some point, one of Ruby’s girlfriends even jokes Leo may be a ghost (as the pass is part of an old civil war battlefield).

What part of Ruby did you enjoy writing the most?
Even now, as I finish the sequel, I’m still getting to know Ruby. We’re still growing together. So this may change. But overall, I really enjoyed experiencing being in such a fantastical situation with her; discovering her quirks and flushing out how she reacted to the unexpected, not to mention how strong she is when it comes to sticking to her laurels. But the romance is my favorite part of the book, and I 100% loved falling in love for the first time with her. Fleshing Ruby out as a wholly independent person in relation to the males in her life, and in the context of her eventual romance, was, and still is, my absolute favorite part of developing her character.

How did you come up with the title Between Wild and Ruin?
On its face at least, Between Wild and Ruin is a bit of a Beauty and the Beast story. I initially gave the book a title that played with that idea, but my editor and manager worried the title was too obscure. So I winnowed down a list to four other titles and then threw it out to the masses, who essentially chose one of them for me. Between Wild and Ruin fits well, because the book is as much about wild spaces, feelings, and people, as it is plot-driven. Plus the plot involves an old pueblo ruin. Ruby and Ezra are also caught between choices about their lives and each other that could literally lead to ruin. Ultimately, I got to keep the word ‘Wild,’ which sums up the kind of world the book’s characters live in, and still play with words AND sport a more intriguing title.

Did you learn anything during the writing of Between Wild and Ruin?
Yes! First, most people don’t know that the civil war made it out to New Mexico. In fact, Union soldiers actually halted the Confederate march toward California permanently after a bloody battle not too far from the Pecos Pueblo in the Glorieta pass. The fact that there’s a civil war battle field spanning the Santa Fe trail, and in same area where numerous Pueblo-Apache wars were fought, AND where there was a massive Pueblo uprising against the Spaniards during the Inquisition, AND where the Pecos Pueblo stood throughout, kind of blows my mind. The history in the pass is incredible!

I also discovered some dark and fascinating local folklore about the historic Pecos Pueblo itself. Especially in relation to the Spanish Conquistadors that came through the area in the early sixteen hundreds. There are still pueblo elders at some of the other 19 active pueblos in New Mexico today that believe the Pecos Pueblo and its inhabitants were either cursed, otherworldly, or touched by evil spirits. What makes their stories even more fascinating, is that it’s still considered pretty taboo among pueblo elders to discuss the lore with outsiders. There are also numerous people in Northern New Mexico and in and around the Glorieta pass who truly believe the whole Pecos wilderness area is a spiritual and paranormal portal — the area is regularly referred to as everything from an extra-dimensional gateway, to where lay-lines converge, to a UFO hotspot — but it’s just as much of a taboo and/or unbroachable subject outside of most local tight-knit circles, as are magical stories about the Pecos Pueblo. The whole hush-huh nature of it just makes it all extra compelling.

What is your favorite part of this book and why?
I love the folklore and fact that it explores Mew Mexico’s history and culture; something I’m a fiend for anyway in my everyday life. But the romance, love quadrangle, and straight up chemistry between Ezra and Ruby does a number on me every time. I’ve had to re-read Between Wild and Ruin a bazillion times now, and sometimes it’s like my brain doesn’t want to focus anymore — but the romance at least never gets boring. It really is pretty epic.

What do you want readers to think, or how do you want them to feel when they read your Between Wild and Ruin?
I’m not sure I’m trying to communicate a message as much as a feeling. That exciting, sometimes breathless moment that comes from experiencing ‘firsts’ and facing the unknown. Of connecting over unexpected emotions, and backgrounds, and alliances, not to mention the rollercoaster that comes with being in love. A few reviewers mentioned how sensory and atmospheric Between Wild and Ruin’s writing is, that they could see, smell, and hear everything as they read, and that because of it, were right there in the Glorieta Pass with Ruby throughout the story. I agree and hope readers find themselves immersed in a story that wholly transports them both emotionally and intellectually to the heart of La Luna, New Mexico, and into Ruby’s unique world. Of course I’d also love it, if the story made readers wonder more about big picture things. But if all people ever get from Between Wild and Ruin is a few fun hours of enjoyable reading — if all the book is for people is super effective escapism — I’ll still be really happy.

If you could introduce one of your characters from Between Wild and Ruin to any character from another book, who would it be and why?
I’d LOVE to introduce Ezra to any number of Christina Lauren’s characters. I think one of the reasons the love story in Between Wild and Ruin works so well for people, is because the writer (me!) is absolutely smitten with Ezra. But because Ezra is confined to a young adult world, I’m less at liberty to flesh him out in ways I might in a ‘grown up’ love story. I love almost all of Christina Lauren’s female and male protagonists from across the spectrum because they’re usually smart, savvy, self-sufficient badasses who have their #$@! together, so it’d be hard to pick just one character from just one book. But if I were to pair Ezra with any one of them, aside from relishing seeing Ezra in what I’ll just nicely say are more ‘adult’ situations, I’d love to see how they’d all react and relate to a flawed and enigmatic, but equally strong male like Ezra.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
It’s super rewarding to hop on Amazon or Goodreads and see new book reviews from strangers who really loved Between Wild and Ruin. I’ve got pretty thick skin, so I’m not terribly offended when people don’t love the book, but it is thrilling and definitely rewarding knowing something about the story really strikes a chord with people. Ultimately, for me at least, that’s what it’s all about. I write because I love writing, but I’m not going to lie and say I don’t want other people to love my writing too. Personally, I adore reading; reading a good book is the best kind of escapism. So it means a lot to me knowing I managed to return the favor where my readers are concerned.

If Between Wild and Ruin had a candle, what scent would it be?
It’d have to be a tryptic candle holder because Pinion, Creosote, and Pine (and maybe lavender) all work.

Ten reasons to read BETWEEN WILD & RUIN:
Between Wild and Ruin is an epic paranormal love story/urban fantasy that critical reviews and readers alike have compared to both Twilight and Beauty and the Beast but say is ‘so much better’ (their words)!
  1. Between Wild and Ruin is an epic paranormal love story/urban fantasy that critical reviews and readers alike have compared to both Twilight and Beauty and the Beast but say is ‘so much better’ (their words)!
  2. Between Wild and Ruin is full of strong-willed, smart, interesting, and dynamic female characters you’ll want to gossip with over fries and cherry pie at your own small-town diner.
  3. Likewise when it comes to the book’s gorgeous male protagonists; you’ll REALLY wish you could will them all into reality. Ezra especially will break your heart.
  4. Magic portals and other worlds!
  5. Between Wild and Ruin is full of lush atmospheric settings; as you read, you’ll be dying to explore New Mexico’s mysterious ruins and breathtaking geography.
  6. Ruby, Ezra, and Angel’s are-they or aren’t-they saga is a love triangle for the ages (RezRangel, anyone?).
  7. Between Wild and Ruin is full of twists; you’ll be up all night, gleefully second-guessing every juicy bit of the story.
  8. Between Wild and Ruin incorporates the complex multi-cultural and traditional small-town norms that still strongly exist in parts of New Mexico, into the novel’s plot and story. In that vein, the story is wholly unique in its portrayal of people, history, and cultures that traditional YA tends to ignore.
  9. Between Wild and Ruin weaves fascinating Pueblo, Latino, Hispanic and Native American History and Folklore into a spell-binding paranormal tale.
  10. Supporting characters, Racine (Ruby’s best friend), Liddy (Ruby’s feisty aunt), and Torrance (Angel’s handsome uncle and Liddy’s love interest) are as relatable and unforgettable as are Ruby, Angel, Leo and Ezra.

Thank you everyone for all your wonderful comments! Especially about the book's cover and title. We went back and forth over both so I'm glad to know they're winners! I hope you end up loving the book as much as I do.

The cover captures the excerpt real well - great colors and fun how her hair blends into the mountain almost giving it a scene of its own. I look forward to reading your story. Thanks for sharing

This cover is gorgeous! It's the prettiest one I've seen in quite a while. Was your time researching for this book fun? That's usually one of my favorite parts of writing.
