She was pointing at her nemesis, thirsting to see him extinguished before her eyes. God would have to forgive her later. Guie’s horse, trained to a fine art, jumped a prone body on the ground—Dain—and landed at a full stop just ahead of the fleeing kidnapper, allowing Guie to land on the backstroke. It was over in seconds. She heard his sword in the air, the thud as it met flesh, and then she didn’t want to see any more.
The others were running for their lives, but the second knight rode them down like chasing mice, leaning from his horse at a full gallop, hewing them down. Within moments, justice had been administered. Nothing but dead bodies lay in the road except for Clothilde and Dain.
Clothilde lay retching and heaving in the dust, gasping for air. She saw a horse’s forefeet in front of her, then felt hands on her shoulders. Her sister’s husband jerked her to her feet in a single motion and then had to hold her up.
“Are you hurt?” he asked, one mailed arm around her like iron. “Clothilde, are you hurt?”
She shook her head. “Just winded.” She spared a glance for Dain, who was still sprawled at the roadside with the second knight simply standing in front of him, dismounted. But he had left him his head.
“What the fuck is this?” Guie demanded furiously.
“I...went over the cliffs,” Clothilde gasped. “He found me. He was bringing me home.”
“From here?”
“He took me to his home first. They took care of me. Please, Guie, don’t kill him.”
“That is not a likely story,” the second knight put in. She glanced up at him long enough to know she didn’t know him. He was young, dark haired, with piercing blue eyes, and speaking with assurance. “I found where you went down and it was right on your own land. You didn’t fall, you were taken down. Then this turd grabbed you for a little ransom, which now is a reward, so he was returning you. Isn’t that the way it went?”
She saw Dain watching, not trying to defend himself. There was no point. They were aristocrats, he was a peasant. They would do with him as they wished, law or no law. But he knew now she was no lady’s maid.
“You’ve taken Lord Hugo’s daughter, you idiot.” The unknown knight spat into the bushes—more disgust than dust. By her count, he had killed three men in mere seconds and his attitude clearly conveyed he wouldn’t mind one more.
“Please don’t kill him, he doesn’t deserve it,” Clothilde begged.
“That will be for Hugo to judge.” Guie was steadying her on her feet, but she could tell he was still furious. Well, let her father judge, then. There were no witnesses left alive. They were lying in bloodied heaps on the road. She turned aside, retching.
“He will not be back for some time,” Guie said when she had finished. “Harold is defeated but they are harrying his remnant to the north. I’ve come back for Cecile’s confinement, no more, then I must return. But you...”
He looked at her with a dire shake of the head.
“All I did was to go fishing,” Clothilde protested.
“Alone. On an unguarded beach with everyone gone to war. Tilde, I do not know what to do with you.” He looked over at the second knight. “Estman, are you not in need of a wife?”

Fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I was published in poetry before catching the romance writing bug. I bring that background to my writing along with a lifelong addiction to horses, an 18 year career in various areas of psychiatric social services and many trips to Ireland, where I nurture my muse. My published works range from contemporary fantasy romance to fantasy historical, futuristic, science fiction and historical romance. Currently I live in rural Pennsylvania with a "motley crew" of rescue animals.

Thanks for your interest and comments, and I hope you'll visit not only this book but the two preceding novels, "Flame of Normandy" and "The Comet." The Comet in particular has been available for some time and was a top best seller in its category when it was released. If you have not yet seen it, check it out. All three books can be read as stand alone works, but a lot of readers commented that they would like to see additional works based on The Comet. Well, here is their chance!

Don't forget to enter the drawing for a $15 gift certificate or a free copy of the prequel, Flame of Normandy. Flame has gotten consistent five-star reviews on Goodreads, including a comment that it contains every element necessary to great historical romance. First time I ever saw that one, but appreciated!

SPOILER ALERT: OK, for those of you who might have read the excerpt above and wondered how Clothilde is going to cope with two rough knights, there is an answer...sort of.

EXCERPT: It was no huge affair like Cecile’s, but a small family wedding. Still that meant guests in the mansion house and the tower. Dressed in her wedding finery, a bottle green velvet gown faced in gold cloth, Clothilde left them behind to descend the steps into the lowest level of the tower where they had a cell. It was dank and musty, only dimly lit by flickering torches and probably black as pitch if no one remembered to light them. She could not remember at that point how long Dain had been there.
He did not look bad—not tortured, not starved or beaten, just detained. For which God be praised, she thought, as angry as Guie had been. Still, he had not abused his prisoner and many would have. Dain was astonished to see her, rising from his cot in the bare cell as if seeing a vision. Clothilde supposed she did appear far different from the blowsy creature he had taken for a maid. If he looked wary, it was small wonder.
From one of her voluminous sleeves she took the key Estman had given her. Dain had not said a word.
“You are released,” she said, swinging the door open.
“How is that?” Their prisoner was justifiably confused. From her other sleeve, Clothilde drew out a purse.
“Today I am marrying Sir Estman. He is the one you saw in the road with my brother-in-law, the day you were taken.”
Dain gave her a slight smile. “Never would I have taken you for Lord Hugo’s daughter. You seemed more like one of us, you understand. If I’d just known.”
“Well, I didn’t wish you to know,” she said briskly. “For my wedding gift, Estman has given me your freedom.” She glanced down at the purse in her hands. “And your reward. Go back to your cottage, Dain. You have enough money now for a fresh start. No more smuggling. You’ll only get killed that way and your sister needs you.”
“How did you do it? Why?”
“Tis only a wedding gift,” she said, as if it didn’t signify. In reality, she knew exactly what it meant—a man’s life. She had never understood that she held that kind of power, simply because she had been born into a particular family.
“So you’re to be married?” he mused, looking at her and taking the purse. “I do recall, now you mention it, they threatened you with it that day. Meant it, did they?”
She smiled tightly. Somehow this simple man understood more than her own family did, probably because he had been the victim of people like them all his life. She had never thought she would be.
“These lands and titles do not come without a price.”

Thanks, Daniel and others who have liked the cover and the hair! Actually, that hair is one of Clothilde's issues. She is not a fluffy character. This girl was born with attitude, but beneath that she is a sensitive soul who frequently laments her faults, never quite realizing her strengths until life puts her to the test. And trust me,it does.

Interesting character names what was your inspiration?

Reply
Miriam Newman link
6/20/2021 06:20:14 am

Thank you, Jen and Jennifer. The names were a result of historical reading and pure imagination. Clothilde, of course, was a fairly common name for girls in the time period I was writing. Du Flaumier is something purely out of imagination. I wanted a name suggesting an alteration of a Viking name yet not attributable to any historical figure. The character of Estman was really the most interesting. People in other regions referred to the Vikings who founded Normandy as Vikings or Northmen, but the primarily Norwegian and Danish raiders often referred to themselves as Estman--men from the East. I wanted to show that inheritance still coming down through that character's family and the name seemed to fit. Clothilde is proud of her family heritage, yet unlike many of the others, she is willing to look past tribalism into a future that encompasses all the people mingling in history and to help make that history.
