Faking the Fall
A Buckeye Falls Novel #4
by Libby Kay
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Sparks fly when a reclusive artist meets his muse in this new installment of the Buckeye Falls series.

Alice Snyder knows her reputation—and if she didn’t, Buckeye Falls loves to remind her. She may come from the town’s First Family, but that doesn’t mean she plays by the rules. After a decade of traveling and going to school, she’s back home and ready to settle down, or at least relax for a while. The trouble is, her neighbors are determined to find her a husband. She needs a way to get them off her back…

When James Gibson, a divorced artist, flees New York for the peace of small-town Ohio, he’s excited to get painting again. The only trouble is, he’s completely blocked. Despite his best efforts, his collection of canvases are blank and he’s at a career crossroads. A chance meeting with the mayor’s sister throws James’s routine off balance, and he’s eager to spend more time with this quirky spitfire.

And Alice might have the solution to both their problems…

Fake Date.

She gets the Nosey Nellies off her back, and James gets time with a woman who inspires him both inside and outside the studio.

Just a few weeks of pretending, and they’ll move on. Simple, right? The trouble is the more time they spend together, the realer their relationship feels. The laughter, the stolen kisses—it all starts to feel like more.

Can these two be honest with each other and find their happily-ever-after, or are they doomed for a real breakup?

Libby Kay’s FAKING THE FALL redeems Buckeye Falls’s spinster troublemaker with a fake relationship romance filled with sweet small town vibes. FAKING THE FALL will bring to mind amazing books like Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams and Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey. But best of all, it returns readers to the small Ohio town and the familiar characters from the previous Buckeye Falls books. All the zany, overbearing, and well-meaning ones! So sit back and grab FAKING THE FALL for the latest roller-coaster romance by Libby Kay.

A lock of chocolatey hair had fallen from her ponytail. James lifted his hand and tucked the silky strands behind her ear. Her skin was as soft as rose petals, and he suddenly forgot this wasn’t real. That this sweet woman standing in front of him wasn’t his. James dipped his head and saw the moment Alice registered his intent. Her green eyes grew dark and her tongue poked out to moisten her bottom lip. There was no going back now.
“Alice.” James croaked her name through the lump in his throat. He had to taste her, just once.
“Kiss me,” she whispered.
She tasted like ginger—warm, spicy and inviting. James couldn’t believe his luck that he was actually kissing Alice. His hands slid up to cup her cheek, cradling her against him. Their lips nipped at each other, curious yet hungry. He hadn’t shared a kiss like that in far too long. The world around him burst into color—bold reds and sharp oranges.
Just when James was ready to deepen the kiss, Alice pulled back. Resting her hands on his chest, she sighed. “I think that worked,” she said, her breathing labored.
“What?” James asked, struggling to clear his head.
Alice gestured over his shoulder. “Roxie and Jennie followed us out. I just wanted to make sure they—” But her explanation died on her tongue. James stepped back, his arms falling limp at his sides.
It was all for show. That moment of color and passion meant nothing to Alice. “I’ll get you home,” he said, keeping his gaze focused anywhere but on her.

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an
author?
Hi! I’m Libby Kay. I’m a librarian by day and a romance writer any other time of day. ? While my debut novella and novel are coming soon, I’ve been writing for years. When I was little, I wrote little stories about people I saw or places I traveled, but I didn’t focus my writing. A few years ago—before we knew what a global pandemic was—I started drafting what would become my Buckeye Falls series. I became an author because I wanted to craft the sweet stories I read for escape. Life is complicated enough, and I like to read and write love stories that will make readers swoon and smile.

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
I’d want to be with my husband, family, and close friends. I’d like to think we’d do what we normally do—talk (gossip!), laugh, and eat too much. The older I get the more introverted I become, but I’d definitely make time for the people nearest and dearest to my heart. ?

What do you do to unwind and relax?
It’s cliché, but I love to read. Whether it’s an audiobook while I cook, or a new romance that I’ve been waiting for, or a tried and true classic like Austen, reading is how I reset and recharge. I also feel like reading a lot helps my writing.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Last year, 2021, when I signed my first contract with Inkspell Publishing. Despite having written for years, it didn’t feel official until someone wanted my writing. It was humbling and emotional, and honestly, I’m not sure if I even believe it now. (Imposter syndrome is real, y’all!) ?

What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?
When I lived in the South, I toured F. Scott Fitzgerald’s house in Alabama and Margaret Mitchell’s home in Atlanta. Just being inside their homes for a moment gave me the warm fuzzies. I also highly recommend the American Writer’s Museum in Chicago. Not only do they have some fabulous writing memorabilia, but I learned so much about famous writers and their writing habits. Plus, it’s across the street from Stan’s donuts, which is a pilgrimage for anyone with a sweet tooth. ?

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
Panda, hands down! I can only write when I’m comfortable and cozy. I imagine if I was a panda bear, I’d get a lot of writing—and snacking—done.

Do you see writing as a career?
Yes, God willing! I love being a librarian, but the writing experience is so much fun. I adore the quiet time spent writing, but I also like being creative with the promotional side of the craft. It’s a nice balance of my introverted and extroverted sides.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
Yes, all the time! I read mostly romance or women’s fiction, but True Crime and mystery/thrillers are another favorite. I like to alternate, because too much swooning needs to be balanced with a little mystery.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
Silence mostly, but sometimes classical music helps me focus. If my surroundings are too loud, I’ll never get anything finished. I guess I’m easily distracted. ::sees something shiny::

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
I try to write one book at a time, but I have several ideas and rough outlines drafted. Inspiration doesn’t always strike, so I like to keep a few ideas going. Writing the Buckeye Falls series has been such a joy, but I also have another novel started that is a departure from small-town Ohio. While it has romance elements, it’s more of a general fiction story.

Pen or type writer or computer?
I’d love to say a type writer—isn’t that just the most romantic notion? 99% of the time I’m writing on my laptop, but I keep a notepad with me for when an idea pops into my head. I cannot tell you how many ideas I’ve lost when I’m not at my desk.

What are you currently reading?
Every holiday and Christmas romance I can get my meaty little hands on! There is nothing better after Halloween than reading about swoony, sappy love. A Very Merry Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams is next on my TBR pile, but I also have both of Courtney Walsh’s holiday romances and Timothy Janovsky’s You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince waiting.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Be patient and trust yourself—and the writing process. It might not happen when I want or look exactly like what I expected, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an accomplishment to be proud of.
