Indigo
by Paula Berinstein
Genre: Time Travel Romance, Adventure

Picture
What would you do if you suddenly found yourself mistress of an 18th-century plantation?

Esther Rubens is looking forward to getting to know her new community in South Carolina and repairing her troubled marriage. But as soon as she arrives in Charleston her life begins to diverge from the idyllic picture in her mind. Her physicist husband, Melvin, is arrested for driving while black, she inherits a strange English property from a cousin she didn't know existed, and she learns that her great-grandmother Sophie, a brilliant scientist kidnapped by the Nazis, discovered the secret of time travel of all things.

Intrigued by Sophie's cryptic journal Melvin begins to experiment with time travel, but his anger at the police makes him careless. The process backfires, killing him and throwing Esther back to 1750. Attacked by an unknown assailant the moment she arrives, she seeks protection at an indigo plantation belonging to a dashing planter with a dangerous secret, negotiating a deal that guarantees her safety. But she soon realizes she's made a terrible mistake. What she discovers on the plantation is far more horrific than anything she could have imagined.

Overwhelmed, she attempts to flee just as the planter's mysterious, handsome brother arrives from England seeking refuge-and offering an opportunity that's too compelling to turn down. But can he be trusted? And are the two of them strong enough to vanquish the evil that's pervading the lowlands? Only time will tell.

The first title in the Indigo series.

The next day I was eating breakfast when a tall, rather disheveled dark-haired man barged into the dining room, just like that. There was something in his eyes that looked desperate and dangerous and made me nervous. If Daniel hadn’t been there I think I might have run, especially since as soon as the newcomer caught sight of me he stared in the most peculiar way. But then Daniel got up and embraced him, and I knew that somehow it must be all right. I still felt nervous though because as he held Daniel the visitor was still looking at me over his shoulder.
“Jesse!” Daniel said as he clapped the big man on the back.
“Daniel!” the man returned with a hug and a smile. They were obviously keen to see each other.
Surely this wasn’t one of my fiancé’s lovers. He was handsome enough, that was for sure, but I knew that Daniel was trying to hide his proclivities, and this was hardly the way to go about that.
“Esther, my betrothed,” Daniel beamed. “Meet my brother, Dr. Jesse Peacock, fresh from England.” He sniffed and made a face. “Perhaps not so fresh after all.”
That explained that. Of course. Now I could see the resemblance, and I could also see that Jesse was extraordinarily good looking, much more so than Daniel. Both brothers had beautifully sculpted jaws, Roman noses, and thick, flowing eyebrows, but where Daniel was all gold and light, Jesse was dark and mysterious, with light olive skin that gave him a distinctly Spanish appearance. His eyes were as black as Pixy’s skin, while Daniel’s were a light shade of brown that was more like tortoise shell. Jesse was taller too—maybe six three or four to Daniel’s six foot one or two. I knew from what Daniel had told me that Jesse was the youngest of the four Peacock siblings and was about my age, twenty-seven. That he had made it all the way from England exactly in time for our wedding was nothing less than astonishing. Obviously he had left before Daniel and I had even met. Other than that I knew absolutely nothing about him. For all I knew he was as uncouth as Daniel.
Jesse took my hand and kissed it, but I could see the surprise in his eyes. “My brother has good taste,” he said diplomatically. He was still staring at me though, and I was beginning to feel nervous.

My Hunky Indigo Hero
by Paula Berinstein

Everyone knows the quintessential romance hero is a hunk. That’s changing with the growing popularity of non-traditional heroes and the acceptance of varied gender roles and sexual preferences, but readers still want a love interest who turns them on, and hunks do that.

Now I can hear you saying, “But I don’t like all those muscles” or “Those guys are too macho for me” or “I love a geek,” and that’s great. I can relate to that. A person doesn't have to be a hunk or a vixen to be sexy. But if you want to sell books, you have to consider what the bulk of readers want.

Picture
Is this what readers want?

I’m not the type of person who generally gives in to peer pressure though. I’m weird and I’m stubborn, and I wanted my Indigo love interest to be different even if no one liked him. I mean really different. I wanted Jesse Peacock to be so different that from the get-go I decided he was going to be a dwarf.

Yep, you heard me correctly. My love interest was going to be hot but little, a Peter Dinklage of the page. Now if you don’t think Peter Dinklage is hot, that’s okay. I do though, and I felt and still feel that little people are way underrepresented in books and I was going to try to rectify that.

You won’t be surprised to hear that when I told my friends what I had in mind they acted like I’d got a concussion, and this is my open-minded, anything-goes friends. They simply could not understand why I would make such a choice, while I simply could not understand how they could feel that way. And so began the long debate. Would Jesse be an ersatz Peter D. or some muscle-bound alpha male?

This guy?

Or this guy?
If you’ve read Indigo you know the outcome, but if you haven’t I’ll tell you: Mr. Muscles won—for now—and I’ll tell you why. The reason isn’t pretty.

Getting people to read your work is difficult. Getting them to like and review it is nearly impossible for most authors. So in the end I took the easy way out in the hope that that might change for me. I guess I lied when I said I don’t give in to peer pressure. Oh well. I never said I was perfect.

If it’s any consolation Peter D. is still waiting in the wings. I’m not done with him. He will appear as a love interest somewhere, somehow, because he deserves to. In a certain way he already has. There’s a female dwarf in my Amanda Lester series who is a love interest—for a five-foot-eleven descendant of Sherlock Holmes, no less.

But I didn’t capitulate completely in Indigo. Jesse is hot, strong, and dangerous, but he's not strictly an alpha male. He’s sensitive and vulnerable, just the way I like ‘em. So if you like hunky guys who are willing to fail and have a few soft spots inside, you might like him too. I hope you’ll give him a try.

Which type of love interest do you prefer? I'd love to hear from you. Just comment on this post.

How long did it take you to write your book?

Reply
Paula Berinstein
1/18/2021 08:05:31 pm

That’s an interesting question, Bernie. I’d say somewhere between two and three years.

Before I started I did quite a bit of research to get a feel for the setting, which took a while to sink in. In fact, I wasn’t sure which colony I wanted to use, and I looked into several possibilities before deciding on South Carolina.

After I began to understand the period a bit I started to outline, which took a while because I only had a vague idea of the story.

The writing and editing took more time than I was used to too because the book is longer than anything I’d written before, about 140,000 words.

Any writer's block tips?

Reply
Paula Berinstein
1/22/2021 08:29:24 am

Hi, Jamie! What kind of block is it? Are you having trouble getting yourself to actually sit down and write, are you out of ideas, or are you stuck on an aspect of your story?

This is a complex subject but let me take a crack at it. If the problem is that you just can’t seem to write, you could try writing a sentence or two in your head. Does anything come? If so and you like it, scribble it down and keep going, either with the same idea or scene or something else. If nothing comes, try visualizing a scene or even a character. Then write a sentence or two n your head and repeat. In this way you might get the juices flowing.

I have found that when I can’t get going it’s sometimes because I haven’t found the right approach yet, so you might try varying your ideas. For example, when I was starting my Amanda Lester detective series I had a concept—that Amanda would be descended from Inspector Lestrade in the Sherlock Holmes stories—but I couldn’t get anything to flow until I made her a teen and set her in an English boarding school. (I had started out making her an adult in Los Angeles—wrong!).

Is this helpful at all? As I said, it’s a complicated subject that encompasses a number of situations. Maybe I can be more helpful if you tell me what you’re experiencing.

What made you choose a plantation as the setting for this series?

Reply

1/28/2021 07:21:28 am

Thank you for your very interesting question, Camille. I chose a plantation as my setting because I wanted to put my characters into a tricky and difficult situation. The horrors of slavery, the stark differences between the situations of the 18th-century characters and the time travelers from the 21st century, and the potential for inner and external conflict made the plantation an ideal place to set the story.

Nice guest post. Interesting perspective. I know when I read, I sometimes get a picture of the people in my head, then if I read a description that doesn't match my picture, I have a hard time adjusting to the new picture.

I love the cover and the time period. Having Jamie from Outlander intrigues me as the book must be set in England/Scotland. I love that region in reading as well.

Reply
Paula Berinstein
2/14/2021 12:38:01 pm

I’m so glad you like it, Jennifer! A little of the book is set in England, as is part of the sequel, which I’m editing now. Some of the major characters are English too, but the bulk of this book is set in South Carolina. The next one takes place largely in the Caribbean and Germany, but Book 3 will take place mostly in England. These characters really get around!

BTW, a prequel short story, “The Unfortunate Death of Bastien Riddle,” which you can download for free on Prolific Works and Bookfunnel, takes place entirely in Scotland.
