Rom’s body went still when she kissed him. Encouraged by this, she grabbed the collar of his shirt to pull him closer. He tasted divine. Like lust and power wrapped together in something smoky.
“Rom,” she murmured against his lips.
And his lips responded to hers—with slow movements at first. His breath hitched, and a low groan rumbled in his throat. Then, his mouth was on fire, claiming hers again and again. A flick of his tongue, and Marina was completely undone.
Goddess. She moaned in his mouth, and he captured that, too, his hands finding her waist and pinning his hips to hers. Together, they backed up until Marina was pressed against the sturdy trunk of a tree. Rom ground into her, his kisses lighting a path of fire along her skin.

A quick interview with R.L. Perez

​What inspired you to write this book?
I had already written two books about the Ivy & Bone series, centered on the Hades and Persephone myth. I had just finished reading Lore by Alexandra Bracken, and while I really enjoyed the story, I was super disappointed that Medusa wasn’t in it at all! And it made me realize, there aren’t a lot of Medusa retellings out there, although it’s a very popular story. So I wanted to give my own spin on it, with the notion that instead of being cursed, Medusa was empowered so no man could take advantage of her ever again. It’s a story of overcoming trauma and finding strength and loving yourself despite the demons within.

What can we expect from you in the future?
More Ivy & Bone books! I’d love to continue writing about Marina and Rom at some point, as the door was left open for their story to continue. But first, my goal is to finish the Ivy & Bone series about Prue and Mona, twin witches who both fell in love with gods of the Underworld.

Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?
Yes! Rom, or Romanos, is a death god. He plays a significant role in Thorn & Ash, Book 2 of the Ivy & Bone series. He is the brother of Cyrus, who is the god of the Underworld.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Serpent & Flame?
Marina is a fire witch who grew up believing her magic was a curse. Fire witches are hunted around the world, and the tribe of witches who took her in look on her with disdain and judgment for the magic running in her blood. During a night of revelry and celebration, she meets Romanos, a death god, and sparks fly. Without realizing his true identity, she shares a passionate night with him, and wakes up cursed. Her body is bound by serpents, and any person who shows affection or love for her is turned to stone. For years, she harbors resentment toward the goddess who cursed her, and the death god who tricked her and vanished. When he shows up again, Marina’s instinct is to kill him, but she learns he was cursed, too. It’s a really great development as they go from lovers to enemies to “stuck together” allies, then lovers once again. I had never written a second chance romance before, but this was super fun!

Who designed your book covers?
I actually design them myself! My book cover design business is called Blue Raven Book Covers. Graphic design is so much fun, and it’s therapeutic for me! I often find myself looking forward to designing my next cover. The Ivy & Bone book covers have skulls and roses, and I just fell in love with the concept! I can’t wait to design more.
