Tempted by the Viscount

Genre: Historical Romance

London, April 1825

Lord Jakob Radclyffe left his past behind in the Far East. Or so he thinks until a ruthless thief surfaces in London, threatening to ruin his daughter’s reputation. With the clock ticking, Jake needs the scandalous Lady Olivia Montfort’s connections in the art world to protect his daughter’s future.

Olivia, too, has a past she’d like to escape. By purchasing her very own Mayfair townhouse, she’ll be able to start a new life independent from all men. There’s one problem: she needs a powerful man’s name to do so. The Viscount St. Alban is the perfect name.

A bargain is struck.

What Olivia doesn’t anticipate is the temptation of the viscount. The undeniable spark of awareness that races between them undermines her vow to leave love behind. Soon, she has no choice but to rid her system of Jake by surrendering to her craving for a single scorching encounter.

But is once enough? Sometimes once only stokes the flame of desire higher and hotter. And sometimes once is all the heart needs to risk all and follow a mad passion wherever it may lead.

“Am I late?” he asked in a tone that didn’t sound as concerned as his words might have suggested.
“Yes,” she replied, sounding distressingly like Lucy on a petulant day.
“My apologies,” he said on a shallow bow, even as his mouth, that talented, efficient mouth of his, maintained its familiar firm line.
“No need for apologies, my lord. In fact, your tardiness is promising evidence that you are settling into the viscountcy quite well.” She liked the way his eyes narrowed at her stern tone, a tone she couldn’t help borrowing from Mrs. Bloomquist. “It is the first rule of the nobility. Everyone can wait.”
“Then my apologies for not having made you wait longer.”
A begrudging smile found its way to her lips. “Now for the second rule of the nobility.” She allowed a beat to pass. A flash of pleasure coursed through her at the very idea that she could hold this glorious man in suspense. It wasn’t every woman who could boast that particular thrill. “Never apologize.”
He stepped forward, halving the distance between them, and took another bow. “Again, my apologies.”
His gaze pinned her in place, and, like that, the power of the moment shifted to him. Oh, how an unmanageable part of her wanted him to use it. This felt dangerously like flirting. Was she flirting?
She was. In the presence of the tease playing about his eyes and mouth, she couldn’t seem to help herself. She tried clearing her throat, hoping to clear her head in the process.
He should be more careful with that smile. It could give a woman ideas.

Sofie spent much of her twenties raising two boys and reading every book she could get her hands on. Once she realized that she was no longer satisfied with simply reading the books she loved, that she must write them, too, she decided to finish her degree and embark on a writing career. Mr. Darling and the boys gave her their wholehearted blessing.

When she’s not writing heroes who make her swoon, she runs a marathon in a different state every year, visits crumbling medieval castles whenever she gets a chance, and enjoys a slightly codependent relationship with her beagle, Bosco.

What was your favorite character to write about?

Reply
Sofie Darling
4/24/2018 07:54:52 am

That's a tough one! All my characters are my babies, and I love them all for who they are. Tempted features a hero and heroine each damaged by the past. It's what drives them apart and brings them together. I was very interested in exploring that point of connection. It was emotional and gratifying to help them through their issues. :) I love Jake and Olivia.
That said, it's Jake's teenaged daughter, Mina, who is my favorite character. When I conceived this story, she was at its very center. I can't wait to write her story ... a few years in the future. :)
Thanks for asking!

Do you listen to music when you write?

Reply
Sofie Darling
4/27/2018 07:51:48 am

I do listen to music. Mostly I listen to brain.fm, which is mostly ambient sound, to help me focus for chunks of time. But sometimes I need a little something extra for inspiration, depending on what a scene needs. I'm a very very eclectic music listener, so I find inspiration from different genres. Right now, it's Rhianna (Diamonds), Wilco (I'll Fight and You and I), and The Killers (The Man). See? Eclectic. :D

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Reply
Sofie Darling
4/29/2018 08:12:33 am

Well, my reading tastes are just as varied as my musical. Just a few off the top of my head: George Eliot and Jane Austen--no surprise there, I'm sure. Hilary Mantel--I'm obsessed with her Thomas Cromwell series and can't wait for book three. David Mitchell--Black Swan Green and Ghostwritten are two of my all-time favorites. (But I love all of his books.) My fave historical romance author: Judith Ivory--I reread Black Silk every year. Right now, I'm reading Longbourn by Jo Baker, which tells the story of the servants in the Bennett household during the events of Pride and Prejudice. I'm really enjoying it. Who are some of your favorites?

Is there any era you haven't written about that you may want to try?

Reply
Sofie Darling
4/29/2018 05:01:46 pm

As a matter of fact, yes! I've had two different trilogies brewing for a while: one set in Tudor-era England, and the other in Viking-era Iceland. The Tudor-era books might be romance, but the Viking ones definitely wouldn't. The main problem is finding the time to get all the books in my head onto paper as I'll be working on my current series for the next few years. :D

Who if any was your inspiration for the viscount?

Reply
Sofie Darling
5/3/2018 01:28:09 pm

In terms of looks: Michael Fassbender. Those eyes...swoon. In terms of personality: not sure. Jake is a guy who always does the right thing, but who's willing to do anything, even if it's the wrong thing, to protect his daughter. I find that idea attractive, so I had to explore it. And him. ;) I really love Jake.

Do you write more in bad weather or sunshine? (it's raining today)

Reply
Sofie Darling
5/4/2018 02:17:10 pm

I would have to say sunshine, as where I live has far more sunny days than rainy ones. However, when a storm system comes through, I always feel charged up and inspired to write. But if the rain lasts more than a day or two, my energy goes the other direction. (Also, my middle name is Sunshine--really, it's on my driver's license--so I don't think I have much of a choice! :D)

Ooo, it's hard to pick one. Definitely the Belle Epoque in Paris for a night or two. Queen Elizabeth I's court for a dinner with her and her imfamously rambunctious beagles. And I would have to set my time machine to take me to the seven wonders of the ancient world. I'd have to check out the Library of Alexandria.

Successful gardening really depends on your climate and how much hassle you want to deal with. I xeroscape and have succulents, but I live in a fairly dry, very hot (in the summer) place, so that works for me. Good luck finding what works for you!
