​I look up and find Chloe standing in front of me, her full mouth turned down on one side as she studies my face.
“What is it?” I ask, reaching out to catch a stray curl that’s escaped her ponytail, rubbing the silky strands through my fingers and forcing her to take a step closer. I like her closer. I’m not supposed to, and I try to hide it usually because she’s too fine, too good for me to sully. I let my other hand move to her hip and pull her so she’s standing between my knees, my back to the bar now. She smells like summer to me, always has.
Her green eyes are huge and hooked on mine, looking like she thinks I might be crazy.
“What are you doing, Raif?” She asks softly, her voice practically a whisper. Her small hands are on my chest, just resting there and I want them on my skin.
I want her.
It’s a fact I try hard to hide most of the time. From Pippa, from myself, from the whole world. No more Pippa, though. And I’m so tired of wanting her and denying myself.
“I’m just touching your hair, it’s soft,” I say, trying to downplay how badly I want to pull her even closer, taste her mouth, claim some of that sweetness for myself.

​I sip my mojito and watch Bran try and extricate himself from the brunette's clutches, but she's clinging like a wisteria vine.
I should probably help.
Yeah, that's a normal non-crushing-on-him type of thing to do. Yes? Yes. I think so. None of his friends are paying the slightest bit of attention to him and he needs help.
I can help.
I hitch my brightest smile onto my face and skip over to them, sliding to a stop just a moment too late, so my mojito sloshes over the rim of my glass and all over the girl's hand. Yep, the one on Bran's chest.
His brown eyes widen, but the relief on his face is my reward. Wisteria girl jumps back, shrieking at the top of her voice like she's the Wicked Witch of the West about to melt into a pile of goo.
Oof, dramatic much?
"Hello, watch where you're going!" She snaps at me and that internal alarm that sounds when someone gets mad at me tries to steal my breath.
Nope, can't do that, not tonight. Not here. Nope.
"Oops, I'm so clumsy, I'm sorry, sweetheart." I say, glad when my voice wobbles as I lean into Bran's chest like I need the support. He rests his hand on my hip, though I'm pretty sure he knows I'm sort of faking.
I think.
Either way, I enjoy the touch more than I should while the girl glares at us like we're everything that's wrong with the world. When Bran doesn't push me aside immediately, her mouth tightens and she turns and flounces away without another word. A giggle escapes my mouth and Bran hides his face in my hair a moment.
"Thank you," he murmurs softly, not moving his hand.
I look up into his warm eyes and grin. "You are welcome. She was just not taking the hint. Clearly a rescue was needed."
He grins at me like I'm the only person in the room and I let myself imagine it for a moment, that maybe I was here on his arm, as his date. Not just Raif's kid sister invited along as a treat.
If only.
"You look lovely this evening," he says, his voice soft and deep, his eyes holding mine.
I glance down at my perfect brand new light blue cocktail dress that I hunted for a week and a half to find and grin up at him. "This old thing?"
He chuckles, "I know better." He keeps close to me, his hand still resting on my hip, scorching my skin with his nearness. I'll squirrel this moment away in my memories with all the other tiny exchanges he probably doesn't think twice about.
I smile at him and say, "You're very handsome." I sigh exaggeratedly, "As always." I just can't stand it. I want to kiss him so badly.
His cheeks flush and he looks down at our feet. Ugh, why does he have to be so wonderful? "Thank you," he drawls, his dark eyes finally coming back up and trapping mine in their depths.
Breathe, Daisy. In and out, that's it. Do not hyperventilate because he's looking at you.

​It's been two days since I set eyes on Mia West. I don't know if it's because I've been warned away from her so thoroughly or what, but she's all I've been able to think about. It's not really surprising. The girl's a knockout. Long honey blonde hair and big dark blue eyes, a mouth made for sin. Not to mention a body I'd love to get better acquainted with. Generous curves in all the right places. And she smiled right at me after giving me the once over. I winked; I couldn't help myself.
Yeah, I could be in some trouble here, but only if I don't control myself.
I can control myself.
Also, I didn't make the best first impression on her. I will probably have to work really hard to have a shot with her.
I don't do that. Well, I haven't so far in my life.

​Luke saves me by spinning Chloe into the scene, both of them laughing. "Hey everyone's congregating. It's been too long since we were all together," Chloe says, a smile on her pretty face.
It doesn't hurt the way it used to. That smile could rip me to pieces at one point. Now, it's an echo, more sadness and the endless missing how our friendship used to be. I don't know how to get us back there now.
I miss my best friend. Both of them.
"That's what I just said," Daisy pipes up from under my arm and Chloe smiles my way.
"Well, let me pile on and say we miss you, Raif."
"We really do," Luke chimes in. "And we haven't seen you covered in baby puke yet... that must be remedied. The rest of us have practically bathed in it."
Bran shudders but Troy just nods. "Sofie does this exorcist thing that scares the bejesus out of me." Mia snorts and covers her mouth. She rests her head on Troy's chest and he smiles down at her like she makes his world make sense. Damn if I don't suddenly feel like I'm all alone in this world even though I'm surrounded by my closest friends. My family. Everyone else has a partner, I have memories and regrets.
I have to find a way forward.

Lissa was first inspired to consider a career in writing when she was in high school. Her English teacher recognized Lissa's gift for storytelling and encouraged her love of writing. She has 8 nieces and nephews whom she adores and a beloved cat who is her baby. Lissa loves the color purple and chai tea, and watches way too much TV.
