Becoming the Witch Prequel to the Rise of Orion Series by J.M. Davies Genre: Paranormal Romance
This is the Haunting and evocative prequel to The Rise of Orion series.
As Miss Elizabeth Marshfield, I’ve never had a choice. My marriage to Sir Charles Dempsey is arranged. Love plays no role in this, but my sizable dowry does. On my eighteenth birthday, as I promise to honor and obey, eerie voices unlock a curse and an ancient magic I didn’t know I possessed, and they won’t rest until I answer them.
My husband suspects I ‘m mad—and mad, I may well be. But this cold-hearted brute cares naught for me as his mistress warms his bed.
I don’t know who I am anymore. Even the blacksmith, Barnaby, can’t disguise his contempt, despite saving me from a fall from my horse. So why does this insolent man affect me so? He reveals he’s a Roma called Raven, and the birthmark of the moon I have branded on my wrist proves I’m entwined in his destiny. Even talking with him could mean the hangman. But my heart has spoken, and I know nothing will ever be the same.
For once—I will choose my fate, even if it leads to a noose around my neck.

Capturing the Last Welsh Witch The Rise of Orion Book 1
Ella Masters’s soul is five hundred years old and in each life, she has been fatally betrayed by men. This is her fifth and final life, and legend says she must meet her true love or this time death is eternal. Wanted for the murder of her latest boyfriend and on the run from the FBI, as well as the ruthless group the Elusti, it doesn’t bode well for any would-be suitors.
Marcus Drayton has a sixth sense when it comes to knowing people, which has helped in his career as a special agent for the FBI, as well as his previous stint as a Navy SEAL. His latest assignment is to deliver Ella Masters, the Witch, which will give him the prized promotion in New York. After he meets the mysterious Ella, and realizes the Elusti are involved, the ghosts of his past force him to seek the truth, making every one he loves a target.
As she runs for her life and freedom, Ella needs to discover whether Marcus is the warrior she needs. And can she trust him with her heart and soul before it’s too late?
A soft steady beat thrummed in her ears and her fingers tingled. She stretched her slim digits forward over the rough and dusty surface of the fire grate, gazing back at the door to the kitchen and her exit before she turned around to continue her hunt. A sharp sting of electricity charged through her, letting her know she was close. Her hand sifted through the soot and rubble; she finally touched a solid object. Ella inched her fingers forward and tightened them over her discovery.
The smug masculine voice boomed close to her ear and her breath caught in her throat. A clicking noise and a distinctive snap brought her out of her frozen stance. How on earth had he caught up with her? She jerked her body forward and curved her fingers around her prize, only to be tugged back. Cold metal jammed hard against her left bony wrist and pulled her away. Snapping her head around sharply, she met Nate’s determined glare.
“I told you if you didn’t behave, I’d use other means.”
Ella watched the boiling inferno of absolute maleness that was Nate spew. Yanking her up off the ground, he quickly applied the remaining handcuff to his solid wrist. Stashing her find in her back pocket quickly, she tried to shove him away but he caught her free wrist to hold her; try as she might, they were shackled together.
She was his prisoner.
His dark gaze studied her face; his hand intently grabbed her chin firmly and he peered at her eyes closely. “Contact lens?” He ground the words out and the harshness startled her as they were so unexpected and for a moment she didn’t understand why he was asking such a question. Frowning, he repeated the question.
“What?” She stood next to him, completely baffled by his question at this point in time.
“Your eyes, Ella. They were mud brown and now they’re as blue as azure. Did you use contact lens?”
She opened and then snapped her mouth closed. She stared him down, straight into his dark, soulful eyes, unwilling to be intimidated by his size and her predicament but dropped her shoulders as if in surrender. “Yes! It’s an easy way to change one’s appearance. Sometimes, it’s necessary.”
One corner of his mouth twitched. “It must be tough being a preschool teacher these days.”

What inspired me to write about a witch who has a 5 hundred-year-old soul?
Ha, the idea for Ella Masters had been simmering in my mind for some time. I had just finished writing a YA fantasy trilogy and half-way through the last book, Power of the Gilgamesh (Children of Annwn series under my pen-name Jennifer Owen Davies ) I had the burning desire to write a steamy paranormal for adults. You see, as a reader, I love a variety of books and I think this has transferred into the kind of author I am. Anyway, I knew, I wanted my female character to be a witch, but not an ordinary witch, I wanted her to be so much more. I was born in Wales, so I began researching about witches there, and stumbled upon an interesting character that the became the basis for Ella’s first life. I knew, I wanted to make Ella Masters a witch/soul-shifter with the ability to be reincarnated and live several lives, exciting right. The more, I read and researched, the more ideas I had for this incredible character. I created the soul-shifter curse, which gives soul-shifters the chance to have up to five lives, and in each one, they are searching for their soulmate who is tied to their destiny!
Who is Ella Masters? What makes her tick?
Ella Masters is a tormented character. She’s a soul-shifter/witch, born into the clan of the Moon Goddess, Ariana. She’s an extraordinary, magical creature with the ability to heal others, sense other supernatural creatures, create fire, draw energy from water, and can step outside of her physical form in a dream state, (astral projection) to name a few of her abilities. In book one, Capturing the Last Welsh Witch, when you meet Ella, she’s an independent woman, used to taking care of herself, but hunted and suspicious of everyone. She has had to learn how to survive alone, and her goal is to stay alive. To survive. But her character changes throughout the series, and by the conclusion, Destiny of the Witch, (due out on April 10th) she is driven by her love for her soulmate and son to protect those she loves at all cost. She has become a warrior.
The Rise of Orion Series
When I started writing Capturing the Last Welsh, I did not intend to write a series. But, by the time, I was halfway through, I knew there was incredible potential for a series of books. Right then, I knew there would be a second book, and then a third and so on. While writing, like most great saga's, I also thought it would be fun to write a prequel...Hence, Becoming the Witch is set in the nineteenth century, and it explores Ella's life as Lady Elizabeth Dempsey.
So, in fact, there are now five books in the series. Becoming the Witch, (prequel, free on Kindle) Capturing the Last Welsh Witch, The Witch’s Heart, Revenge of the Witch, and Destiny of the Witch, due out on April 10th, 2020. The series, centers around Ella Masters, her life, her loves, her betrayals, her challenges, and triumphs, which concludes in the final instalment Destiny! However, I already have the cover for a spin off called The Vampire’s Witch. And, although I have said this is where the story for Ella ends, you never know, she may well pop up in future books!
My writing Routine
I believe in being organized as I think this really helps to be productive. Over, the years, I have taught myself to be disciplined about my writing schedule. This is a job to me and therefore, I get up and write Monday to Friday, each day, until I reach a minimum of 1500 words. I will then, spend time preparing promotional graphics and market my books across social media, send out my newsletter or write on my blog. Right now, I have a new release coming up in April, which means I’m spending more time promoting and getting ready for the big day!
I have tried to write at other locations, like the library and various coffee shops, with some success. If I am not able to write in the day because I have a meeting with my author friends or a meeting to attend, then I will write in the evening. If the weekend is free, I will usually sneak in some writing as well. I would write every single day, but I have a husband and family who come first, so I fit it in around them.
