Dogs and More Dogs, Another Murder A Sheridan Hendley Mystery Book 2
An abandoned house, an abundance of dogs. And a dead body or two.
Sheridan Hendley’s volunteer position at Pets and Paws takes a new turn when more than twenty malnourished dogs are found at a rundown house on the outskirts of town. When the body of an elderly woman is found amidst mountains of clutter in the house, a search of the property leads to startling revelations. And another body. While Herman Stoneham’s death is deemed natural causes, his wife’s is not. Where did all the dogs come from and who’s responsible for Justine’s untimely death? Are the two connected? With dogs and murder at stake, Sheridan can't help but get involved in the investigation.
Old Friends and New, Another Murder A Sheridan Hendley Mystery Book 3
A touch of nostalgia, a murder, and good friends.
When a former colleague is implicated in his neighbor’s demise, Sheridan Hendley returns to Cold Creek to prove his innocence. Annoying as Max can be, she can’t imagine the quirky professor is capable of murder. Unfortunately, not everyone shares her opinion. Of course, it doesn’t help that Max threatened his neighbor in a public place soon before the man was murdered. Or that the victim’s drug shipments had a habit of turning up on Max’s doorstep.
Christa Nardi is an accomplished author of cozy mysteries. Christa's background is in higher education and psychology, much as her protagonist, Sheridan Hendley in the Cold Creek mystery series. She has always loved mysteries - reading them, writing them, and solving them. Christa is a member of Sisters in Crime.
Introducing Major (and Recurring) Characters
in the Sheridan Hendley Mystery Series
Sheridan Hendley, professor turned amateur sleuth, is medium height, with brown hair and blue eyes. She’s middle aged, previously married and divorced, and recently remarried to Brett McMann, her leading man. Sheridan drinks lots of coffee, is a chocaholic, and loves to solve puzzles. Her greatest strength, fueled by her curiosity, is her ability to make connections. Her curiosity hasn’t killed her yet, though it has gotten her into some tight places. She’s loyal and fights for the less powerful, the underdog. Her best friend is Kim Pennzel. Sheridan no longer teaches fulltime. She teaches part time at Millicent College and volunteers at a local dog rescue. No children of her own, Sheridan is “mom” to Charlie, her Sheltie and step-mom to Brett’s daughter, Maddie.
Brett McMann is the 6 foot, handsome State Police Detective, who Sheridan fell in love with and married. At 50 years old, there’s a touch of gray in his dark curly hair that compliments his hazel eyes. His smile is contagious and accented by his dimples. Brett is assigned to Appomattox office (Division III) and often partners with James Fabry. Brett’s not always thrilled with Sheridan’s sleuthing, but he’s a smart man. Rather than argue, he taught her self-defense and sometimes joins her in the sleuthing process. Sheridan and Brett met in the first book of the Cold Creek Series and married in the last of that series.
Madison (Maddie) McMann is Brett’s daughter who in Old Friends and New, Another Murder is 15going on 30. She often blurts out whatever came to mind. She wears her long brown hair braided or tied back and has Brett’s hazel eyes. Maddie likes seafood; she likes to bike and hike; sings in the choir. Oh, and she likes Alex and puppies. She adopted the runt of one litter, a Labrador mix, and named her Bella. She’s had Brett wrapped around her finger, but now that boys, driving, and dates are the issue, that’s not the case anymore.
Kim Pennzel is Sheridan’s best friend. Kim is a read head, also in her late 40s and divorced. While Sheridan is methodical, Kim is highly reactive and very emotional. They became friends when Sheridan taught at Cold Creek College. Kim keeps Sheridan up to date on the goings on at Cold Creek especially with Max. She’s also available to sleuth along with Sheridan from time to time. Kim’s in a relationship with Marty Cohn and it’s going well but not to marriage. Yet.
Max Bentley, another colleague from Cold Creek College, is a person of interest in Old Friends and New, Another Murder. He’s younger, in his 30s, with big dreams of doing enough research to get to a better university. He has black hair that always needs to be cut and is messy. He overreacts to everything, thinks Sheridan is a magnet for murder, and is intimidated by Brett. His wife, Stella, is very quiet and calm.
Mrs. Dora Chantilly owns and runs Clover Hill Paws & Pets. Situated in an old colonial style home, she lives upstairs and the rescue is downstairs. She grew up in Clover Hill and had a relationship with Blake Buchanan. She left, and returned when her grandmother died and left her the house. Although she uses “Mrs,” she was never married and still pines for Blake. Mrs. Chantilly has a habit of taking in strays, from dogs to teens in trouble with the law. She has an uncanny ability to know what’s going on. On the other hand, she rambles and jumps around topics. She’s grandmotherly, softness, and light, except when somebody hurts the ones she cares about, whether they be canine or human.
Blake Buchanan, past Mayor and a member of the founding family of Clover Hill is the current head of the Buchanan family. He’s influential in Clover Hill and in Appomattox for several years. The Buchanan family goes back to the Confederacy. Not only are they influential in Clover Hill, they have a lot of clout in the county as well. There’s one or two in politics elsewhere in the state, too. He and his wife, Celeste, had three sons and one daughter. Blake is a frequent visitor to Clover Hill Pets & Paws.
