Richard couldn't hear her thoughts, but suspected what she was struggling with. He took a step toward her and spoke to her back. "It's
no wonder we are what we are."
She whirled around to face him. "It's no wonder you are what you are! No wonder you would count yourself a casualty of your curse. Well, I'm not a casualty. Perhaps I can't presently feel love as I used to. But I can still feel."

Weekly revival services at the Inner City Mission Church started promptly at eight o’clock. Sister Betty Marshall liked to be on time. In
fact, she liked to be early. Stuffed inside her floral print going-to-church dress, Sister Betty bustled along the sidewalk. Worn leather sandals, stretched beyond their original shape, accommodated wide brown feet and slapped the concrete as she went.

Sister Betty clutched her Bible close. She had to make it to the revival center before Luella Thompson. Theirs was a friendly competition but a competition nonetheless. When she didn’t make it before Luella, Luella never let her forget it.

The walk light turned amber and then red just as she reached the busy intersection. Sister Betty slowed down, resigned to her fate. She
wouldn’t make it on time. Luella would get bragging rights for this evening. “Unless—” She strained her eyes to see. Was that a homeless man in the alley? “Yes, Lord!” She headed over. Sister Luella might beat her to services but what were the odds that she’d bring along a potential convert?

When Henderson first noticed the lone Sister Betty, his fangs pushed down and out. He’d intended to wait until she got closer, and then pull her into the alley. He wasn’t prepared for her to approach him.

Her Bible captured his attention first. He drew back, hissing. The cross around her neck added to his torture. His ears burned from the sacred words she now quoted. Searing pain shot through eye sockets each time he looked at the cross on her necklace. He threw his hands over his ears, closed his eyes against the pain, and ran.

He squinted through the smothering fog that pressed against the windshield like a tightly wrapped blanket. He gripped the steering wheel
with both hands. Another pothole like that one could cost him an axle, and he had no desire to be stranded on this God-forsaken stretch of road where dead and bloodless livestock turned up in pastures where they grazed. At least that’s what a recent copy of the Sunday Sports
reported, a tabloid he regularly read.

“Vampires killed ‘em and drank their blood,” the paper quoted one victimized goat-herder as saying, and though the words read like
crazy-talk, each dead animal did have a set of identical puncture wounds on the neck. “They live in that castle.” A photograph accompanied the article. “I’ve seen ‘em. Nothing like this happened before they moved in.” The goat herder’s words stuck with the courier like a festering
splinter in his mind. It didn’t help that his route would take him to the very castle mentioned in the article.

Sue Dent hails from Mississippi and is the author of Never Ceese and Forever Richard the first two installments in her Thirsting for Blood Series. Her debut novel Never Ceese appeared on the 2007 preliminary ballot for a Bram Stoker Award. Her second book in her Thirsting for Blood Series, Forever Richard, made the 2010 long-list at the British Fantasy Society.
Both Never Ceese and Forever Richard made the 2009 Pluto Award long-list with Never Ceese moving onto the top three books short-listed. Never Ceese was also Book Club Choice of the month at the American Christian Fiction Writers Association in May of 2007 when Sue was a member. Sue no longer pays to be a member due to the fact that the ACFW is a writer's group designed to help author's find homes with CBA niche market publishers. Sue is currently a member of HWA, Horror Writer's of America.
Dent’s stories continue to appeal to general market readers with surprise appeal to the denominationally discriminative (niche market CBA member publisher's serve. Ms. Dent likes to point out that though her work appeals to readers of this niche market, she does not write specifically for that market which is why you won't find her work in CBA member bookstores or rather on any shelf at any Christian Retailer or even listed on-line at member on-line bookstores such as Christianbook.com.

Excerpt from Brett Krusen's Bald Head Radio!

Picture
In 2005, I enrolled my now 20-year-old son in kindergarten and sent my now 26-year-old daughter on her way to the seventh grade. It seemed the perfect time to pursue publishing my stories so that others could enjoy them as much as I did. Perhaps they would enjoy them enough for me to make a living off of writing. I had several stories to choose from, but I wanted to start with something fresh. I decided on vampires. I grew up with Dark Shadows and never lost my love for Barnabus and Quentin Collins. Therefore, with my new free time, I scribed my first vampire/werewolf novel but struggled with a title for it. I ventured out to a nearby mall at one point to think about this. Upon entering, I spied a banner stretched from one side of the ceiling to the other, that read; “Never Cease” . . . something, something, something. Ceese was one of the main characters in my story, and so the title was born. I did so enjoy the comments by some potential readers, “Why should I read this book? The author can’t even spell.” And this was after receiving reviews from the likes of Eric Wilson of “Fireproof” fame.

Though I had a relatively complete MS for Never Ceese, I felt something about it was missing when I read through it. I decided to find someone who might help me figure out what that “something” might be. I searched for and found “professional” editor Arlene W. Robertson. Together she and I whipped Never Ceese into shape. At the end of it all, I had an MS with a guaranteed less than 2 percent error rate and a chunk of change now invested in my debut novel. It paid off, though. I got picked up by a “traditional” publisher because they knew they didn’t have to invest in an edit. They paid me an advance against royalties, (that never came) and printed 5000 hard copies with dust covers of Never Ceese and took me to Book Expo America in 2006 to sign 500 copies to give away to libraries and visitors. I even had someone offer to make my never-read-by-anyone book into a movie. I left the BEA wondering what the heck just happened.

I spent the bulk of my time at the BEA hanging out with Captain Jack Sparrow. Who wouldn’t? Yes, I spent the day with Johnny! Johnny O’Kelly, that is, an impeccable Capt. Jack Sparrow and my obsession.

Picture
During the time I was with this publisher, I (not my publisher) submitted Never Ceese to be considered for a Bram Stoker award. It ended up making the Preliminary Ballot for Superior Achievement in a First Novel the year Jonothan Mayberry won in that category with Ghost Road Blues.

An honor.

When I shared this information with my publisher, they responded with, “let us know when you win.” Because of making the preliminary ballot (I’m guessing) The British Fantasy Society contacted me and wanted to know if they could review “Never Ceese.” They have asked to review every book I’ve written since then. Forever Richard even made the 2009 BFS Long List.

Shortly after all of this happened, my first publisher went under and sold all my books to a liquidator. I was picked up by a second “traditional” publisher who helped me get Forever Richard out before they too fell to the dreaded return policy set up between big publishers and bookstores during the depression to help bookstores survive. (I won’t get into that here, but I do so love to talk about it if you ever want to hit me up for a nice long chat.)

Mr. Nicholas “Halloween” Grabowsky (author of Halloween IV and reviewer of Never Ceese) offered to help me with his publishing company, Black Bed Sheet Books, which enabled me to get onto my own self-publishing feet with S D Enterprises where I do it all! Book covers, formatting, my website, you name it — all but the editing. I still get help with that as I want to appeal to as many readers as possible.
I have a new goal for my writing now, though, and it isn’t to make a living with it. My new goal is to make back all of the money I’ve invested thus far. After that, shoot, I’ll give my books away or at least only charge what it costs to print them and ship them.

Thank you so much for the cover compliment! I do them all myself as I can't afford to pay anyone and it provides me with another creative outlet. I'm very nervous everytime I release one because there are those who will always be negative. My motto now is that you can't please everyone so don't sweat it. :).

Never Ceese is the first in the series, Forever Richard next. Cyn No More is the third with Penny for Your Thoughts to follow July 1st, 2020. All three gravitate around vampires, werewolves and the Daoine Maithe (Irish for the Good Folk aka fairies) with the "good folk" not being introduced until Cyn No More. So there ya go. :) Lots of folks enjoy the series. Would love to have another fan.

Concerning the book covers, I started using folks I met along my journey as cover models. Friends I thought looked most like how I imagined the characters. The model for this edition of Never Ceese was "Scream Queen," Melanie Robel. Forever Richard was friend Stevie Mclellan who I decided looked just as I envisioned Richard as looking. I chose actor https://www.facebook.com/tevis.marcum. For the front cover of Cyn No More, good friend Raquel Soto,. https://www.facebook.com/Raquel.Ortiz.Soto and for the back cover of Cyn No more actor/body builder Jared Degado https://www.facebook.com/JaredMichaelDegado. Here's the back covers for those two books:http://suedent.pairserver.com/frback.jpg and http://suedent.pairserver.com/cnmbc.jpg You can also visit Amazon to view both front and back covers. :) I'm not certain how this post will show up but if all else fails, visit Amazon.

Thank you Lella! I feel like I learn a little from each cover. Nicholas Grabowsky of Black Bed Sheet Books and author of Halloween IV did the covers of the editions I published through him and while I thought those were GRAND, there were still those who complained about their quality. I could probably pay someone for a cover that might please more folks, but I put ANY money I have in the story and the editing etc . . . The books themselves have had rave reviews from folks in the industry that matter. The British Fantasy Society, Eric Wilson. It's the story that matters. All I wanted was to pen something that could be read and enjoyed with the worst review being, "I don't like that kind of story." LOL But never, "the editing was horrible. I couldn't even read it." :)

I like most covers but I think your books would do a lot better if you invested in a better artist. Please take this as constructive but the Thirsting For Blood Book 1 cover, I would take the bats out. The persons eyes also reminds me of bad round headed alien drawings. On Cyn No More, the more I look at it, the more it's ok but at first glance, it reminded me of a giveaway ad. The cover of Forever Richard looks like the movie cover of a low budget horror movie. The Penny For Your Thoughts cover is actually pretty good but again, would get rid of the bats. Sorry for not being very positive about the covers but again, hope you take it as constructive.
